29gallon.jpg

Hello, im new to cichlids and just wanted some feed back on how im doing. In my 29 gallon I have a small Senegal Bichir, 5 long fin danios, a baby convict, a baby jewel, a male and female dwarf gourami, and a male and female Kribensis (The male was wild.) I feed them a combination of frozen food, good quality cichlid pellets, and as a snack ghost shrimp every now and then. Feel free to comment, offer advise or ask questions so you can get a better understanding so you may form a comment. I would love to hear what you think.

Hi welcome to the forum.

That tank is quite a bad combination with too many cichlids and also a bad choice of cichlids for that size tank and the Bichir is definitely going to out grow the tank. Also mixing Dwarf Gourami with a Jewel Cichlid and a Convict - not sure that is going to end well.

Also in a cichlid tank long fin danios dont sound a great idea, I know Danios are fast - and in some cases Danios do well in cichlid tanks like this - but long fins are going to get wrecked by some of those fish. Also I can imagine the Gourami nipping the danios as well....

Jewel Cichlids are really nasty as they grow up and the same can be said for Convicts I think you need to think about changing your stocking or getting a bigger tank.

I would keep the Kribensis and the Dwarf Gourami then swap the long finned Danio to regular Danios (Zebra, Leopard etc) and then find some other compatible fish that will work long term. And then rehome the Senegal Bichir and the Convict and the Jewel.

Or you could upgrade to something like a 75 gallon and keep the Bichir, Con and Jewel and then put the Kribs in there also and keep the Dwarf Gourami and Danios in the 29g but I would still be tempted to swap the long finned for regular Danios.

Hope it helps

everything seems to be fine with each other, the bicher is a smaller species. the convict and jewel bother each other and no ones else, the male krib with protect its cave but thats about it. For right now with as small as the are the size of the tank is fine. thank you for your imut though

It will be fine for now but give it a few months and you will run into problems - Jewels and Convicts have always had a bad reputation and it is earned to be fair. As these fish grow and get into sexual maturity thats when the problems will start.

Also the Bichir - although Senegalus is a smaller species, its not saying much as they will still grow to a foot long - by my standards (and most others standards) a foot long fish does not belong in a 30 gallon tank...

Lastly, why ask "How is my tank?" when you dont want to take advice?

wills has pretty much covered it. Youve got a bad selection of fish that will run into problems later on.

How can you say that? You asked and wills answered. Your tank is too small. I've never kept a convict but I've seen the damage they can do. If you have a badly stocked tank that's massive that can still be a problem. A smaller tank and its upping the odds on disaster.

I'm not offering any opinion but I would like to learn from this. I haven't read much on any of these but whenever I brush over stuff about them it seems to suggest that Convicts are really nasty. Would I be right in thinking that the Convict will bully almost everything and as it gets bigger cause greater problems? Also would the Jewel vs Convict issue end with a death, what with the Jewel defending a cave?
Sorry OP not making any suggestion or comment at you, but would like to know if I am close to what others think?

All the adice that Wills has given should be taken - the stocking of that tank will NOT work.

One thing I would argue on is danios and dwarf gourami. In my experience, these will happily co-inhabit without an issue.

Another issue you have is that you have 1 female and 1 male DG. It is quite possible that the male will eventually harrass the female to death. You should keep multiple females for each male.

However, don't look to add anything else to that tank until you have rehomed the unsuitable fish.

the bichir will outgrow that tank in a few months. Do u mind me asking what u feed them and if you will upgrade in the near future?
