Hi Everyone.
I am new and thought i would post a topic.. I think i posted in wrong part before... (now dont know how to delete it)
I currently have a 5ft tank with a community variety at the moment..
Also I have a 3ft tank Looking at breeding bristlesnose...
Any suggestion to my 5ft Tank would be great..
I want to change some of the fish.. no longer the whole comminity thing doesnt work for me anymore..
I have a lot of fish that you cant see like
1 Clown Pleco, 1 Sailfin Pleco, 1 Pictus Catfish, 2 Clown Loach, 2 Silver Sharks, 3 Synodontis Euruptus, 1 upside down Catfish, 1 Black Shark, 4 Bristlenose (will be moving to the other tank) 2 Ghost Knife, and 2 Yoyos.
The rest are fish are going to eventually go to new homes.. Mollies Gouramis chili barb black widow and corys in....

Hi welcome to the forum! You sound very enthusiastic which is fantastic as ever :)

With breeding the BNs have you considered doing some rarer plecs like king tiger? The offspring will be more valuable and easier to rehome than BN young. There are quite a few options in a 3ft tank one thing I would make sure to do with that tank is run an external filter, there will be a lot of poo and the extra size found with canisters is going to help.

With the 5 foot tank what are the other dimensions you have a lot of big growing fish in there for example the black shark will hit 2 foot and the sailfin will come close as well. There are a few compatibility issues as well, So what I would consider doing would be to have a bit of a swap around so you end up with something like

1 Clown Pleco, 1 Sailfin Pleco, 4 Pictus Catfish, 4 Clown Loach, 5 Silver Sharks, 1 Synodontis Euruptus, 1 Ghost Knife, and 5 Yoyos

Ive done it that way because you had some fish that needed groups and others that need to be alone, line the ghost knifes even in a 6ft tank its difficult to house more than one electric fish of that size as the signals mess them up and they get angry. Also the Synos, the larger one could take out the smaller upside down (nigriventus) Ive put it down to 1 on the list but I think you could keep the three if you wanted. Also I upped the pictus, loaches and sharks because they are all shoaling fish - with the clowns and the silver sharks they get pretty big and will need a 5x2x2 minimum so maybe consider something smaller like more yoyos and some denison barbs instead?

Also I see you have gravel, its usually recommended that loaches and other bottom dwellers with barbels and soft mouths have a sand substrate. This is quite cheap and easy to do especially if you live in the UK you can get argos play sand and its the same as much more expensive aquarium sand.

Depending on the other dimensions of the tank you should be able to add in more fish, I would go for more mid water fish as with all those loaches and catfish the bottom is pretty jammed up and with that many big fish some space issues could arise if the synos or the plecs started to make a home and treat it as a territory.

Hope thats helped :)

Hi Thanks for the reply..

I Live in Australia I think i should of stated that before...

I guess I would have similar sand here in our toy shops for sale....
My reason behind the gravel most of my Lfs said it would be better.. I did consider that Most of my fish like Sand substrate but leaned more towards the finer gravel...Had no problems on any of my fish and has been a suceess so far..

I have not Looked into really much else in the breeding department as i thought most plecs were hard... Ie shouldnt be in Captivity.. But i have no idea..

My tank is
Aquarium dimensions: 150 W x 68 H x 46 D cm
Aquarium capacity: 370L
Aquarium lighting: 6 x 30 inch 25W..

I added an extra filter as i just could... If that makes sense.. and heater.. Incase some thing goes wrong with either...

I understand people say that certain fish dont get along... All the advice i have been given regarding my fish has been correct.. My fish all get along... Never had a dead fish except a molly...Which they wont be replaced....

The Black shark was a last minute choice i made a few months back.. Bought him at around 7 cm now over 20cm OOps...
My partner only likes Big fish... So maybe one day i will have another bigger tank...

What sort of requirements do you think i should have for breeding plecs Sorry for so many questions...

No no not at all. With the playsand we have to be careful sometimes as they put detergents and stuff in them so maybe find an other australian member I believe there are a few and see what they do?

With the fish fighting, if its not happened yet fantastic but it is a risk and some fish can turn in a matter of days.

With the plecs, not sure why they shouldnt be in captivity? Only things like the truley monsterous ones like a 3 foot adonis plecs etc or even the gibbiceps at 2 foot I dont think belong in captivity because there are simply not enough people with big tanks for them to live in. Majority of plecs are hardy its a massive grouping of fish I say grouping rather than family as there are multiple families under the name plec. http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/numbers.php?mode=l&thumbs=16&start=240&genus_id=0 thats the full L number library and you will see there are a decent amount of them that stay under 5/6 inches that are suitable for a species tank in 3 foot.

For breeding plecs most people have dimly lit tanks and lots and lots of wood. When you say breeding plecs though some have very different requirements to others so read up on them and what their natural environment is like and try to match it the closer you get to their natural home the more likley you are to get eggs.
