Well, I woke up today to find my betta, Pablo, still at an angle on the bottom of his tank. I hoped he was just resting, but after tapping the tank he didn't move like he usually would. I left him for a few mins hoping he'd perk up, but I returned to find him the same. I even put my hand in the tank + picked him up to see if it'd get him to move, but to no result.

I'm gonna miss you, little guy. I'd only had you for 15 months or so, but we've had some memories.

I found it strange that he had his eyes open. I'm not 100% sure why he died, but he did have a rather rounded belly and had some shrimp dissapearances. I decided to feed him less hoping it would just go down, but clearly not. His stomach was bigger this morning - this may sound silly but could he have got a shrimp and had an obsruction? I can't help but feel partially responsible for not acting quick eonugh though :(

Any ideas as to why he died are very welcomed.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I have no experience with betta fish, so I'm afraid that I can't offer any advice other than general aquaria and water quality issues.

Awww, I am sorry for your loss :(
When u say his belly was swollen, were his scales jutting out at all? Kinda like a pine cone effect? If so, he may have had dropsy...which as far as I know has no cure. It's an infection that leads to organ failure, and IF that is what it was, there would have been nothing u could have done.

sorry to hear that..same thing happen to one of my females she ate to much and she got really fat and wouldnt go down and ended up dying

Fish can't close their eyes, they have no eyelids.

Sorry for your loss :(

That explains it then, AlmostAwesome - I don't think I realised that. Amanita.m, his scales weren't sticking out. I'm thinking its "over-hunting" that did it. Or that being a factor towards his death. Thanks for all the 'sorrys' ;)

I found my Betta Jazz like that, looked just like he stopped swimming and sank, all his fins we out etc. I think my OH accidentally over fed him :(

R.I.P lil fish

Sorry for your loss, 15 months is a long time to have a betta considering most live for 2 years and are usually nearly a year old when they get into the store

Thanks for all the 'sorrys'. I've decided I'm going to re-do the tank and decide what I'm doing about the other fish in there (which I was planning to do anyway) before thinking of getting another. I've also decided that I don't think I'll go for a 'fancy' one online - I'll "resuce" one from a pet store instead (after overhearing advice from the staff there in the past, I think it'd be a good idea).

I have thought though that I'm sure pablo had a better life than many other bettas have had, what with poor care etc.

Only issue is my username - pablo, it seems, shall "live on" online...

It was a fish someone cared about. It's sad u feel the need to make fun of the loss of someone's pet Percy.

Is just so so so sorry for your loss, I know what it feels like to lose a fish, it's horrible and and sometimes youll feel like you did something wrong. Just know that you enjoyed him while he was here and he was happy. I'm so sorry :(
