my relatives had a tank in the backyard, and they didnt want it, so my dad brought the tank home, i think its a 75 gallon. i have lots of time everyday now, but im not sure if i ready for fish again. i dont think we have any room for the tank. if i do get rid of some things to make room for the tank, i can siphon the water so it goes out my door and into the yard, but im not sure how im going to put water back in. my dad wants to put a yellow tang and a clown fish in it. what do you guys think?

You do realize the Tang and Clown are saltwater right?

What you do is appease everybody if it is going to be a "household" tank... Put in some of what you want and what your Dad want. Just make sure you research Saltwater if that is what you want to do.

If this tank is only for you and you are footing the bill, then do only what you want. But if your dad is footing the bill, you will want to appease him. :)

If you want activity comm. :) corys/cats for the bottom .... fill all layers .... maybe pic something opn a diff layer than your father ..... ex. corys bottom usually ...... danios like to stay at top ..... and some platys may like hte mid ... u c ??

yeah, i know they are saltwater. his other choice was goldfish. :/ if my dad gets the fish he wants, he will probably take good care of them like he does with his orchids. he gets them to flower every year. what kind of cichlids are you talking about? he likes blue german rams, so im guessing he will like cichlids

oh yeah, he wants to use these shells and bits of dead coral and other stuff that were in the tank because he said they were natural. i was thinking that sand would look better, but he says sand is too plain. do you think these shells would be ok?

A good planted community tank with sand, driftwood, rocks, etc.. won't look plain. Search around here and find him some pics.

Those coral, etc... are going to mess with a freshwater tank...

Since nobody said anything about putting water into the tank...

I bought a new bucket for that, store and treat water in it (use a garden hose to fill) then pour it into the tank with a big cup or something. Though that can be tiring esp with a large tank.

I haven't seen python products in my part of the world, so don't know exactly how they work, but I think you can use those, too.

Pythons can be good and bad. For a first time fill you could just use a garden hose. Doing this it will take about 48 hours with the heater on for the temp to stabilize. If using Sand, expect a good cloud for 24 hours using this method.

I would get one young, big fish, like a red devil or an oscar. Something that will be personable and kinda turn into a member of the family. A lot of people think it's a waste to put one, large territorial fish in a large tank, but I don't at all.

Just a tip if you do decide to go salt....saltwater will kill your grass so be careful of where you drain it.

well, after seeing the green terror on aquariumfish.net i was thinking that would be the perfect fish http://www.aquariumfish.net/images_01/green_terror.jpg eats pellets, feeders, is colorful, and active. this fish would be perfect for the whole family if it was reallly taht green. ive seen other pictures http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/gterror.html which dont seem too colorful. anybody know where i can get some green ones that the one on aquariumfish.net? or is this just a one of a kind fish? anybody know of any other colorful preditory fish that dont grow larger than 7 inches? after 7 inches, they kind of scare me
