Hi my girlfriend has a betta he eats but his fins are stiff, he lies on the bottom and also darts to the top for air. Just looks like he is dead.

can anyone help please thanks

Mike

doesnt sound very good. He should be in warm water particularly when they are ill. Make sure the water is also spotlessly clean and conditioned. if he is struggling to get to the surface lower the level of the water. Good luck and any more info such as photo might help.

He has got a heater. which is set around 23/24c (i think?!?) Also from the picture you will see hes not eating all of his food when he normally does,
thanks

Ideally temp should be between 26/28c. I would get a thermometer so you can make doubly sure that it's at the correct temp as the reading on the heater aren't always that accurate. Can I also ask what the food is lying on the bottom of his tank.....I can't quite make it out and are you removing it if he doesn't eat it?

He is on flakes, yea i remove it but i leave it for around 30 mins

poor fellow, yes increase the temp to 26/28 do large water changes daily and reduce the amount of food you are giving him, the amount on the gravel is about 10 times more than a betta should be given and try to feed him live daphnia or brineshrimp for a week. another thing is to help him surface for air you can either place him in a floater for a week which wont do him any time, this will keep him close to the surface and then hasnt got a long way to swim for air, or you can turn off any filters and reduce the water level down so that is about 5 inches deep but when doing this you will need to keep up with the daily water changes. good luck.
