I haven't been a member on this forum for long but I thought it might be interesting to see what people would have done differently in their tank setup(s) and fish choices.

My setup is very new but after reading threads on this forum I've come to the conclusion I would have done several things differently if I could start over again. :(

I'm glad I did a fishless cycle as my tests have been absolutely perfect even though I'm now fully stocked 6 weeks down the line.

One thing I would have done was decided on a theme for my tank.
At the moment it looks quite nice, (hope to post some pictures soon), but like some I've seen with slate, sand and even Aztec masks strategically placed, I find mine a little boring in comparison! :/

Also fish selection - my choices of fish have been restricted by the two BGK's I bought, (as I really love oddballs). Since trawling this forum I found out it's not the best choice for a 22gUK!! (I blame the previous forum which I used to use and the very bad advice I received!!)

Choose what fish you would like, see how big they're likely to get, check it out on this forum and stick to your final decision! (Even though that DP looks lovely and would look great in your tank and the shop assistant tells you it'd be perfect with your Neons and Guppies the warnings are out there!!!!!!)

My tank was a bargain at £50 with stand and all the equipment but looking around it would have been great to put that towards a 40gUK - but I guess that's the joy of any hobby, there's always bigger and better and definately more to learn!

I've rambled on enough - I just thought it would be cool to hear from others experiences - both good and bad! :p

I wish I had gone planted sooner. I've had the tank running since 1997, and only just started with any real plants this time last year, and just in january, got rid of all my plastic plants to go for all real. My fish interact with the plants way more... swimming in and out, hiding 'sleeping' in them at night. I'm very happy with the look of it, and wish I had done it much sooner.

I'd have gotten a bigger tank.
hey I second that, but if we all started with bigger thanks, we'd still only want bigger thanks ;)

I would have done a cichlid tank.

and you coyuld always go get a bigger tank now ya know.

I have been very happy with my 35 gal. I bought it used off of a relative who had it in his garage for 5 years gathering dust (literally... you should have seen how nasty it was - it was upside down, but still ) It has been the perfect size, and I would keep it, but a friend is moving and can't take his 90gal with him, so I am gladly taking it off his hands.

juat about everythin
