My oranda Shinju's eye appeared to be swollen when I got home from my vacation. I thought it was pop-eye so I went and got some medicine for her. The swelling went down a little, never went away completely after about 4 days of treatment and today her eye is worse. I dont have a digital camera, but I have included a drawing to give a better idea of what is up. She is a white fish so the pink swelling is obvious. There is some sort of "mass" or stronger discoloration that is slightly purple. on her cheek, as I have noticed this morning there appears to be what looks like a white head on the mass. Is this a fish pimple or something else?

Shinju is about 3 years old, lives in a 10 gal with a feeder goldfish. She is swimming, eating, and acting as she always has and shows no signs of being lethargic.

I have no access to a hosp. tank at school, and the only medicines I have on me at this time are for fungus, fin rot, pop-eye, and a basic "pour in the tank if you fish gets a booboo" gel. Can anyone tell me what is up with her?

Thanks

:rip: And, sadly, Mitshu, the male Oranda, ended up being almost eaten alive by the other fish in his tank, so he was put to sleep on June 1. Ningyo, the male blackmoor, who was a little ill himself died roughly 8 days later.
:fish:
The sick fish was not in contact with Shinju.

Im really sorry you lost two of your lovely fish

As for Shinju, its difficult to say as some Orandas get growth around the eye but you would expect it to be on both sides.
I think you may have to see it as a bacterial infection and see if you can get some medicated food such as medigold to feed. Up your water changes and try maracyb and see if that will help. Salting the tank to .2% will stop any other infection getting in. Add aquarium salt at 1 level teaspoon per gallon and again 12 hours later.

Have you tested your water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates to make sure the water is in good condition before medicating?

So the plan of attack is to do water changes each day of 40% to see if that helps first as the fish are over crowded and feed as much of the medigold as the fish will eat for 3 weeks and nothing else.
If you have gravel then use a gravel cleaner and clean out your filter each week.
Salt the tank if no improvement after a week to .2% and keep going with water changes every 2 days.
Add maracyn after 4 days if the salt isnt working.

Think about seperating the fish and having shinju in her own 10 gallon tank.

And if you ahve a heater then up the temp to 78f and add extra air. The higher temperature will kickstart the immune system and help to digest the food.
