my internet's been down for a couple days so i've been itching to get on here. I caught another one of the little guys EDIT: the little guy i'm talking about is a red bellied newt there is a pic of him in the invertebrates forum under identify this salamander end edit: and he's in the tank now. I have another ID problem now though. While I was hunting for another newt I came across two snails sitting on a log. I have a bit of land in my tank so I figured, "if they aren't aquatic they won't go in the water and I can take them back. Wel they stay in the water so I guess I'm keeping them. But what are they. They are brown about the size of an acorn and they have a twisted shell, kinda spirally. Also whil i was at the lak I saw a bag floating in the water. I picked it up to see if anything was under it, and because it's trash, and low and behold there was a fish inside of the bag. I took the little guy out and dumped him in the powerade bottle that I picked up on the side of the pond to transport the critters. Anyway I could swear that he's a guppy. Is this possible? He has the same fins as a guppy i think except he isn't colorful. His sides are shiny though. Could he be a guppy and if he is would it be a good idea to breed him with fancy guppies. I heard that fancies are getting really bad genes because of poor breeding habits and I was thinking that I could Imporve the species by breeding it with a wild guppy. I think the first two are the guppy and the third is the snail. Sorry the pics are so crummy I'll go try to take some better ones tonight when the glare isn't so bad. Thanks
EDIT: sorry the second one is the snail. BTW the jeans in the back were put there to block the air from a vent. They have been positioned better now, so no worries about the vent.

edit: i changed the pics

i think the fish might be a white cloud
because mine look a bit like that.

hard to tell anything from your pics. Was the fish tied in the bag like you would get from the LFS or did it just swim into the bag??? Is the fish in a quarentine tank?

can you give me some information on them?

Edit: fullgrown size, sexing, etc.

Everything in the tank except the ghost shrimp came from the same lake so no to the quaranting question. No the fish was not tied in the bag but I don't think he wanted to be in there, but I could be wrong. I just picked up the bag and there was about 2 inch of water still in it. I thought maybe there is a salamander in the bag, so i looked in it and saw something darting around.

Certainly looks like a male livebearer, which I can't say, but the third pic looks like it has a modified anal fin (gonopodium sp.). Doesn't look like a WCMM to me. Snail could be a common pond snail.

forgot to ask. what do snails eat. do i have to get special food for them?

he looks very much like a guppy to me- guppys aern't always nesarsarily brightly colored and they do come in grey/brown colors, due its coloring i would say its a female because they tend to be less brightly colored than the males but not because i can see its anal fin very well in the pic.

On the issue of bad imune system guppys, its mainly due to the large amounts of inbreeding they have to put them through to obtain the realy vivid colorful colors which in turn gives them bad imune systems.
I would say no to taking the little fish out of the wild, just select the more "boring" colored grey/brown types of guppys and they'll be able to give you the imune systems you need in your stock, i am running a similar project right now :) .

Geography-wise, any wild livebearers you find would most likely either be mosquito fish or western mosquito fish. Western mosquito fish have a similar color to the fish in the picture. However, does the fish have a gonopodium? What size is the fish? Also, what sort of temp. is the water in this lake? Are we talking tropical or coldwater temperatures?

well pheonix the little guy is already in my tank.

Sylvia it's a cold-water pond. He is currently in a tank with newt that have been seen hunting beneath the ice of frozen ponds so he can deal with very cold temps.
Gonopodium is the anal fin right? sorry not up to date on my technical fish part names. Guess I should read up on that. I think you can see it in the third picture. It hangs straight down sometimes.

I looked at that link and I really really don't think that's the same fish. Those fish have two fins on there bellies, this guy has one long one that hangs straight down sometimes.

The second link looks more like it but the bottom fin is different. It's longer and thinner.

I think it may be a mosquito fish. I didn't look very closely at all of the fish in the first link. On a second glance I noticed that some of the mosquito fish do have the long thin anal fin like my fish.

The female guppy anal fin is kinda fan shaped while the males is more thin and straight, although he sounds like a male to me but i could be wrong; If you could get a clearer pic of him that would help loads :)
