Hello! I'm planning on getting myself a female Veil-Tail Betta, and I'll be setting up her tank within the next week or so. I've done plenty of research and I believe I'm ready to tackle the tank, however I need ideas on how to keep her enriched once I get her. I'll be putting live plants and plenty of little cubby holes for her to hide in, but is there anything else I could add/give her to help keep her entertained?

I always try to expose my bettas to German opera music. I read to them from the writings of Herman Melville. Occasionally I drop a couple of calculus worksheets into their tank for them to work out. My bettas aren't bored and they're very smart, but they do seem to commit suicide at a young age.

Now now, Badger! Don't you know sarcasm is the lowest form of wit? ??

She will be just fine as long as there's lots of plants and places to rest near the surface. You could put a mirror in front of her tank for a minute once a day to make her flare. It helps to exercise her, but don't let her do it for too long because it may stress her out... And a stressed fish is an ill fish!

Now, as a Moderator, you must understand that us newbies take what you say as the total truth...

I’m now going to remove the worksheets from the tank - I was worried I’d have the only thick Betta in the tank ??

Well, in that case, let me qualify what I said. Don't really put calculus worksheets in your tank. The ink can raise your pH, and the decomposing bits of paper can clog your filter.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend this, but if you have a relatively chill betta, you could add some shrimp. My betta is pretty chill and he enjoys investigating the shrimp and even chasing them around a little bit once in a while, but he never harms them. I tried it with another one of my bettas who was not so chill and he murdered all the shrimp within a few days, so it could backfire.
