I have moved my tiger barbs into a 29 gallon and now have a 30 gallon long available. Any smaller cichlids (besides convicts) that would work well in a 36" x 12" x 16"??

thanks

Convicts are awesome but besides cons you could do africans but...or you could do rams, maybe a sevrum, keyholes?, i cant really think of anything right now

EDIT: You could get a pair of Jewels which would be sweet

dwarf cichlids would be fine in that tank , there are many to chose from though .

I like apistos , curviceps , nannacara , some slighly larger cichlids like kribs , keyholes , fire mouths would be good as well.

I still say you get a nice looking pair of cons
The lfs where I got the 29 gal for the tigers has a beautiful young breeding pair that they will sell. .. I know that that would be it for the tank.

I was kind of afraid to bring up getting Convicts around here given some of the other discussions in Chit Chat (if you know what I mean... :p )

Have any of you kept Flyers (green fins) or rainbows??

To put convicts in is a waste of a good tank!

It depends on what you want really. The permitations are vast.

There are alot of nice apistogramma cichlids and rams. They would go well into a planted community tank with cardinal and rummy nose tetras, pencil fish, corydoras catfish and other small tetras. I would suggest only one pair of dwarfs so they have sufficient territory. If you want something a little larger why not try laetacara dorsigera (red breasted flag cichlid) as they are nice and colourful and get to about 100mm (4").

You could try a pair of pelvicachromis taeniatus or subocellatus or humillis or the more common pulcher (krib). They could be mixed with a shoal of congo tetras and other small African tetras/characins. Maybe a small synodontis variety aswell.
There are also nanochromis transvestitus, parilus and nudiceps which could work as an alternative to the pelvicachromis species.

If you fancy tanganikan cichlids you could have a colony of shell dwellers with the large barnicle shells. There are the neolamprologus similis, multifasciatus, meeli, brevis, hecqui, Lamprologus ocellatus and the colour forms of it, altolamprologus calvus too if you want something a little bigger with a few colour varieties to choose from. You could also include neolamprologus leleupi or brichardi although they are not really shell dwellers but could add some extra colour.

I personally would not entertain anything too big as you will be limited to the ammount and types of other fish you can keep with them. I think things like the hero's and cichlasoma's would not be a great choice as they would limit you too much. As regards fire mouths I currently have a pair in my 6'x18"x2' height tank. They are terrorising the other fish. They will be removed and homed in another tank. These things are sent to test us.

I hope this info will be of some use to you.

Rainbow cichlids are nice(herotilapia multispinosa). A pair will breed like flies. Just like convict cichlids. That is ok providing you have an outlet for the young. Otherwise you will have a tankful of fish that no one wants.

I seem to think the flyers are a larger less colourful fish?

I had thought about kribs, congos, and upside down cats as a sort of Afican theme tank. But, I'm thinking more of CA or SA cichlids if possible.

I can always buy another tank for the kribs. It's great having a fiance who likes fish :fun:

Keep the suggestions coming!! Thanks B)

do they [all ] have to be cichlids ? check out my sig .

I love small cichlids , but my other fish act similar , just a suggestion .

Matter of fact I'll be getting some curviceps [ similar to dorsiger ]and some nannacara in a day or so .

Like Fishman said , larger fish will limit what you can put in with them .

No, they do not have to be cichlids. I am just looking to start expanding the types of fish that I keep. I am open to lots of ideas.

I am also thinking about changing the nature of my 55 gallon community as well. I may turn it into a CA/SA set up and still have the 30 long for more of a specialty or species tank.

Remember, the fiance gave me the green light (thread on chit chat) and I've already taken her up on getting one new tank so I could free up the 30 long.

Those gudgeons and badis badis that I have are great little fish , aggression isn't bad , they breed like mad , right now I have gudgeon eggs in a 15 gallon tank , and a male badis in a 10 with his eggs .The only thing is , they won't eat prepared food , it's gotta be live, frozen or mostly freeze dried , the adults I mean , fry are another story .

They live happily with my Apistogramma cacatuoides .

Their water requirements are pretty much the same , and I really do nothing special to my tap water to alter it's chemistry [ dechlor is about it].I have plants so I add an iron supplement .

I remember a little of your other post now , you play golf when you can , right ?, I 'll have to go and see if I'm repeating myself , I do that .

Your lucky BTW , my wife doesn't care much for fish .

You are not repeating yourself. You are being very helpful and supportive B)

The other thread involed me being able to get more tanks. That's how the 30 long came open b/c I got a 29 standard for the tiger barbs. I figured the 30 long would have a better footprint for cichlids.
