hey, so far I'm thinking this for my 29 gallon

4/5 platies
3/4 zebra danios
3 Cories
?????

What else do you think I could fit in there without overstocking (use the highest number shown for the platies and zebras)?

29 Gallons ~ 29 Inches

3 Cories ~ 7.5" (if all female and larger ones)
4 Zebra Danios ~ 12" (at max size)
5 Platies ~ 10"

Total = 29.5'

I doubt those danios will all reach a full 3", though, so you're pretty good with stocking ^^ Also depends on the cories, definately not all of them reach 2.5"; some stop growing at 2 and some go over 3, it depends on the species. You could add one or two of any of those fish and still likely be fine with an adequate filter and good tank maintainance..

Danios CAN be nippy, so they might bother the platies, but as long as you have atleast 6 of the danios you should be fine. I have 13 danios in with goldfish and they never bother the goldfish, and the goldfish have long flowing fins too.
If you want the danios, cories and platies, I would go with:
3 or 4 female platies, 1 male platy
6 zebra danios
4-6 cories.
Technically thats "overstockng" according to the 'inch per gallon rule' but none of those fish are really big waste producers so you won't run into any problems.
You could also do a school of 6 tetras (any smaller type), the cories, and a centerpeice fish like a gourami (dwarf would probably be best) or a dwarf cichlid, like a ram or a krib. You could probably go with a pair even.

^^^Yea, thanks. I really want to stock some type of livebearer in there though, and I like platies, and my LFS has a huge (5/6 tank) selection of differeny varieties.

I've always like the gouramis, and my LFS has a nice selection of those too. So maybe.

5 platies
2 Dwarf Gouramis (could I get 3 since they're only like 2 inches)
4 cories
Maybe some this thats not a fish too like apple snails or something?

Oh, I have a great filter. It's suited for 40-70 gallon tanks. It's an aqua Clear 70 btw. So how about that list I made above?

Whoa, overkill on the filter there, lol. Yeah, you can probably go a little over the inch per gallon rule; I see you already have a few platies, have you considered other livebearers? Swordtails and guppies are plentiful and come in many different colors; Lyretail Mollies are good looking and a 29 gallon tank could support a few of them as well.

I don't know anything about snails, sorry ^^

Well, the filter came with the tank, and it's on the lowest setting at 40 gallons, so it's not that much overkill. I really dont want guppies, because they have babies like once a month, and I don't want that. I'll consider mollies and swordtails, but my LFS has so many different varieties of platys. What about the list I gave? Is there enough room for 3 dwarf gouramis? Or should I stick to two?

I do not think that you are overstocked. I would add 6 rummy nose tetras. Those stocking rules are a guideline. Water chemistry (specifically nitrate) and territory requirements are the most important things to think about. I love rummynose tetras, they are AMAZING at schooling. My school of 11 all stay together and even face the same way 95% of the time. Rummies are very sensitive to nitrate though so be careful with them. I keep the nitrate below 15ppm in all my tanks and my original 11 are all still alive and they were sold way to small (about 1cm long).

Yea, my LFS has those rummy nose tetras, they look pretty good.

5 platies
2 Dwarf Gouramis
3 cories

So would there be room for some rummy nose tetras with those fish? Would the platies be in the same area as them?

With your filtration, you should be able to exceed the 1" guide, especially with those fish. As already mentioned, they aren't really big waste producers. I would go with 6 corys though as they are happier in groups of at least 6. The only cory I can think of that really gets over about 2" are the green or emerald corys. I have seen some close to 3" at Petsmart. You should be able to have the 5 plattys (10"), 6 corys (12"), and dwarf gouramis (4") plus 6 small tetras (12" - be careful of some of the fin nippers like serpaes and buenos aires). That gives you 38" of adult fish but I don't think that would be a problem at all, even if you upped the corys or tetras to 8. One thing to keep in mind though is that you will have fry from the plattys. So if you try to raise them, you will need more tanks.

Well, I have a 10 gallon now I'm goin to use that to raise the fry in. Will the tetras interfere with the platys? Are they in the same area of the tank?

Depending on the type of tetra, they may be considered anything from bottom to top level fish. I don't have any but I think platys are considered mid level fish. In either case, I don't think they will both each other. Just FYI, here is a site showing the different fish and the levels they prefer.

I want the rummy nose tetras, and they are in the same strata as the platys. Even dwarf Gouramis are in the middle. Will this pose a problem?
