So im on my second round of convict fry in a month. The first batch they laid didnt survive very long. I tried to save at least one but that was unsuccessfull. I think he swam out of the box. This batch of fry hatched last weekend. Ive kept the tank well fed this week to avoid the bigger fish eating the small fry, but im wondering whether i should move the babies now into the box thats attached to their tank. I waited a couple of weeks last time.

They are still in their lil pod and havent come out yet. I would like to raise some of them and the aquarium we got them from is happy to take some. Or should i leave them a little bit longer. They are all in the pod swimming around/shimmering around but i cant get food to them. The dad sits outside the door guarding them and the mum sits in their with them so they arent in danger but they also arent getting out and eating. I managed to get a light in their quickly while i fed the adults and they were on the other side of the tank from them and they all look healthy and free swimming.

When is the ideal time to seperate them? It is only the second batch in 2yrs and in less than a month. The parents health is way better this time round. Last time they seemed to battle a cotton mouth looking fungus aswell as battle wounds, but this time they look healthy.

Convicts breed like wildfire apparently so if none survive im sure there will be more litters but any suggestions on seperating would be great. The box attached to the tank is one that has a small filter in it and an air stone aswell to help with circulation inside the tank. I have gravel in the bottom of the box for coverage. I know convicts make great parents after practice and these babies are only a week old but this batch has also grown more quicker than the last batch. I will try and post up a photo of the box and the tank.

It houses:
2x electric yellows
2x yellow tail acies
4x convicts
2x johannies

You will probably have 3 or 44 survive out of this batch, but,.... best be that you "syphon" them off at about 3 days after hatching and place them in a (minimum) of a 24" tank (well matured)... to grow up alone.... (if you REALLY, want to keep any)..... They are prolific breeders, & you can try this every week....(until you get it right)

Yeah i know they breed constantly. I have seperated 3/4s of the fry into the box on the side of the tank. They are still so small. The other 1/4 i have left with the parents. They were swimming round with the ones i left in the tank and looking after them. I want to see if it is easier to raise them with the parents or with me feeding them. I want to try and keep some of them. All though i do need to do a vac of the top of my sand as ther eis lots of left over food from this morning.
