So, many years ago I had a school of female bettas in a 50 gal tank. The tank was mainly small tropical fish. I did weekly water changes and followed all of the good fish husbandry that I knew about at the time. The buckets of water that sat for a week to eliminate chlorine, etc. All of my fish did really well, no fish deaths with the exception of those betta and they all appeared to have died from the same thing.

They would swim around and just look sick, no energy that sort of things. I don't rememeber if I remember right they didn't have any visual illness. They would just appear ill. Fins closed up, lack of energy, etc. I had a sick tank at the time so I would pull them out and put them in the sick tank with a small amount of salt and malafix. They would be ok for a couple of days and then die. After they died within hours they would be surrounded by a white fungus. It would appear pretty fast since it was always there when I checked and found them dead the first time. It was a very thin fungus, not thick or heavy body wise, but would cover an impressive area. I would of course clean the sick tank inbetween so I don't think it was from the tank. It only hit the bettas and I would only have one who would get sick at a time. One would get sick and rougly a week or two later another one. They all had the same symptoms. No other fish in the 50 gal caught it. I don't remember buying a lot of different meds. I lived in a bad area for pet supplies (WalMart was it) and it was before I was smart enough to buy stuff online.

It killed all of my bettas and then disappeared. It as so odd. I had the bettas for a few months too, so if it was a new fish it wasn't one of them that carried it. They were all young (I only had the tank for about 8 months before I had to move). It was odd.
