Please could someone ID this fish please.
I believe it to be a Blue Acara as sold by the Lfs. However, over the past couple of weeks it has become very aggressive, leading to me to believe it might be a GT.
It is about 3" in length, and bought about 3 months ago. I believe the Acara to be fairly placid, but this little one has turned out to be quite a little rascal. I don`t believe it is possible to tell the difference between the two in its juvinile stage but hopefully someone can tell me otherwise.

Thanks,

Gary.

Ok, would like to make absolutely sure before it is returned to the Lfs ( Would not be suitable for my tank in its adult state ) How can you tell the difference between the two. I thought the only way was in a mature Acara or Gt where the caudal fin had a more definative orange tinge to the GT?

ffs thats not a GT
this is a green terror

absolutely nothing like your pic.
your pic is almost identical to a blue acara, unfortunetly the black mark on its flank resemble the green terror.
but this is most likely a blue acara + green terror hybrid, they are actually really common, and are often sold as one of their parent species.
the fish you have is deffinetely not 100% either.

hey kubora666 how about this one

Everyone said was green terror but don't look like urs

he/she is 4 years old

it looks like a very subdued coloured green terror, possibly female.
mine is a dominant male.
though yours does have an odly shaped head...
theres also a slight possibility yours may be an acara hybrid also,
but yours is definetely more green terror like.
gooners looks nothing like mine or yours

I'd say Acara, GT's ( esp Males ) have a Bump on the head where as BA's don't plus the lack of colour around the tail points me to it being Acara. As kubora says there are a lot of hybrids about so it may well be a mixture, I even managed to breed some by accident a few years ago and still have 2 ( they look more like the GT father ).

Cheers Lisa, no offence taken about the photo, all the decent batteries (for the camera) are in the kids Xmas toys. On the drop down box, the second one looks identical to the one I have. :good:

i can't believe anyone would call that a green terror.

it's a blue acara. and a very nice one too!

btw - the name green terror is fairly unjust... gt's are not relly any more aggresive than other cichlids of the same size. you have to remember that it got it's common name at a time when cichlids were relatively 'out there' - likewise the jack dempsey.

I've kept an Acara before, those things can be monsters if they want to! Yours is definitely an Acara. The facial structure gives it away... it looks nothing like a small GT.

well this is sorted then :)
its a good thing i had those pictures handy.
good looking acara's though :) whether or not they have some gt in them!
