Am I keeping it right? Some advice would be really helpful.

This appears to be an Anubias, though I'm not certain of the species but perhaps it is A. barteri.
 
I can't really tell what that is within the red...?  Don't let the rhizome get buried or it might rot.  This plant works well attached to wood or rock.  The true hair roots will grow down and may grow into the substrate which is fine.
