Just wondering if anyone can tell me what sort of plec I have, I inherited him/her when I got the tank about 12 months ago, was about 2" then, and now I would say its about 3", someone told me it was a BN but it has no bristles so I'm not sure

Last photo taken with flash so looks different colour.
Thanks in advance

Female bristlenose can be minus bristles.

Do you have a photo of the pleco with its dorsal fin raised? If you count the rays on the dorsal fin and its more than 10 you have yourself something that will get big.

If its 7-8 probability of it being a bristlenose is much higher

Good pick there mbou: the colour patterns certainly look a good match

I'll try and get a pic of fin raised, but took me ages to get those pics seems very shy and hides away most of the time, still patience is a virtue so they so

Looks like a clown plec to me?

yes looks very similar to clown plec although not as dark in colour

Just found this pic of clown plec and I think your right MBOU
clown-pleco-lg.jpg

according to the details "The Clown Pleco is one of the many dwarf pleco species which only gets to 3.5 to 4 inches" so I would say mine will not get that much bigger (hopefully)

Thanks for the replys guys

have not managed to get pic with fin raised but have counted them and there are 7 rays to it, does this mean it is likely to be a dwarf variety?

Most likely. I dont know loricarrids incredibly well but when researching my own ones species I found that more than 10 indicates pterygoplichthys.

Thanks for your help, I feel happy knowing its not going to massively outgrow this tank or the new one when I set it up.
Just need to update my sig now
