So, this algae started growing in my tank two years ago when I first started my setup.  It's continued through three completely different stocking changes, and while I actually enjoyed the appearance of it to begin with (and didn't notice any issues in water quality while it was growing), it's stinky and messy, so I'd like to start doing whatever is necessary to remove it from the tank, or at atleast tone it down a little.

The algae grows on my driftwood, the terracotta pots, and on my slower-growing plants (mainly java fern).  I have not seen any on the glass or faster growing plants.  It starts to brown at the ends if it gets too close to the surface, and falls off in clumps at times that sink to the bottom of the tank.

Anyone have any idea what it is?  I've tried ID'ing it myself, but it never seems to match any of the descriptions I've found.

Any help is greatly appreciated! :D

Here is a good algae guide, http://www.theplantedtank.co.uk/algae.htm

I think yours will come under the Hair, Thread, Fuzz, etc section. It states the cause as being low nutrients and co2 and ammonia spikes.
Do you dose fertilisers? Keeping your tank clean and doing plenty of water changes will help a lot also
