Hello fishkeepers :look:!

I currently have a well established Rio 125L tank with a number of rainbowfish in there.

I have just moved to a new bedroom in my house, which has opened up some more space.

I'd like to run a freshwater nano-tank.

I am, however unsure where to start with these,

could anybody reccomend a good tank with all the features I need built into one? (Filter/heater)

How small is too small when it comes to these tanks?

What would be the best fish to keep?

Thankyou for your time in reading this,

Tim.

It all kind of depends on what size you can go upto, just because its a nano tank does not mean you have to go tiny. If you could do something between 10-15 gallons that would be great, there are a whole range of nano fw tanks that are coming onto the market this year so if you can wait a while you will be able to get something great.

Some really good fish for FW nano tanks are micro rasbora, pygmy gourami, pygmy cories, rosy loaches, badis fish and also shrimp. There are more but it depends on what you like.

Thanks for your fast reply, i'm open to suggestions really regarding fish, I like allsorts so long as they are colourful. What sort of dimensions would I be looking at for a 10-15gallon? How easy is it to maintain the water peramaters in a smaller tank?

Do you have any specific makes of nano-tanks that you could reccomend? Also how much am I looking at spending?

the arcadia arc 35l is a lovely tank http://www.warehouse-aquatics.co.uk/index.php?p=product&products_id=2704&cid=1

ive been looking at getting a nano tank and i would love the arc, but i dont think i have the room =[

the fluval edge is also a pretty nice tank, thats 23l

fluval is also bringing out a new nano called 'chi'

Yeah the arcadia is a nice one I have one of those not set up at the moment (it makes the lounge to cluttered apparently) but like I say bigger is better.

Mew is quite right about the fluval Chi there are tons of other designer aquariums similar to these that fluval are about to launch (for once an aquarium maker with a slight sense of aquatic trends, next they will start selling bigger tanks for SA cichlids as well haha)

Back to you though, with the fish have a google of the ones I mentioned - with the micro rasbora there are tons of the species but google galaxy rasbora and chilli rasbora the galaxy are quite unique but the chilli are similar to other small sized rasboras like sparrow etc. Also have a look at green neon tetras as they stay much smaller than the common neon tetra.

I would really recommend looking at the fish I mentioned rather than going for the more commonly available slightly larger "nano" fish like guppies and regular neons etc as your tank will be a lot more varied with the true nano fish like I mentioned it will also mean more fishes in your tank as well.

Also actually while Im on about guppies an other good nano fish are male endlers but dont get any females as if they breed you will become over run very quick :)

Some very useful responses here, thankyou. As for lighting, I hear sometimes the lights don't do a brilliant drop at keeping plants healthy, is this something we just have to put up with and just get some lower light plants like crypts?

You can change the bulbs on the arc tanks quite easily the front section slides off really easily and you can upgrade your lights as you want. If your considering the hightech side of planting maybe take a move to the planted section and weigh up your options.

hi there :)

PetsAtHome have one (17L) with light and filter (though will have to change filter to something less powerful) for £30!!

I picked one up and have been very impressed!
