I have a 125ltr tank. 2 of my neon tetras are showing what appears to be ich or fungus - small but visible fluffiness on their backs. I forst noticed this a few days ago. I gradually increased the temp to 84/29 and added 6 teaspoons of aq salt yesterday. I normally do around 10ltr changes 2 - 3 times a week. Yesterday I did 15ltrs and tonight I have changed 5ltrs so far.

I have 3 assassin snails in my tank.

Is there anything else I can do to help them along? Obviously medicines are a last resort, but are there any I can add with the snails present?

Should I do more/larger water changes? How do I calculate the correct amount of salt to add per water change to keep it constant?

Is it worth dropping a bit of garlic in the tank?

I'm competent with looking after my fish (I like to think so), but I'm far from an expert and would appreciate any guidance. Cheers :)

You can use protozin with assassin snails present, I've used it with no issues and assassins all still alive and killing!
I've also read that garlic can assist with combating ich as the parasite doesn't like the taste of it.
Wether it is a proven fact is a different matter!
I use garlic guard to soak frozen food and crushed peas in a couple of times a week.
I've never used fresh garlic so I couldn't say how much you would use.

Truth, i'd actually never heard of it before
I'd never say anything that spitefull  :good:

:)

I didnt realise you could use protozin with assassins. I have some protozin here.

I crushed a garlic clove and soaked it for a while, then finely chopped it and mixed some of it with a couple of chopped peas. My fish loved it.

I've used protozin twice with assassins present and not had any issues.
If you are unsure remove them if you decide to medicate.
I was going to remove mine before medicating but couldn't find them so i did a little research and found numerous posts in wich protozin had been used with no ill effects on assassins so i took a chance and they were fine.

I have nowhere to remove them to, I think if things are not looking up by tomorrow I may risk the protozin.

Should i get salt because ive seen it does alot of good thing as a piece for your medical kit :good:

Got home from work to find two of my neons dead :(bI dont think its tetra disease, so I popped a dose of protozin in.

Aquarium salt is a good all round tonic and strress reducer. i always keep a small quantity in my tank (for all the good its done this time lol). Just keep in mind salt doesnt disappear with evaporation, only with water changes.
