I think I possibly have ich in the tank now :(
one tetra has one white spot on a fin, and the pitbull plec seems to have oneon its dorsal fin and another on a side fin.....is this going to lead to an ich outbreak??

I've already got finrot from the pitbull plec i added last week......do i just keep treating the finrot and then see what happens in terms of the ich....and treat it afterwards?
I am treating the finrot with melafix, pimafix and aquarium salt.

I would put in soem ich medicine before you have an uncontrollable outbreak. I've used and am currently using mardel's coppersafe which has always worked and i've heard clout works well too. You should be able to pick them up at your local fish store. I also had to mix melafix in with the mardel coppersafe because of a sore my fish had.

Nooooooo!!!!! Don't mix the meds. Just use salt and heat for ich, it is the best method! It make take several weeks but anything to avoid adding icky meds to your tank! I'll find you a link for the way that worked best for me.

Ok, this is information about ich and how to get rid of it http://fishforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=1648 I can't find exactly what I did, there was a method to it. I'll see if I can find it.

Ah ha! I found it. This is what someone told me to do when I had ich, it worked beautifully

Salt is defined as aquarium salt and NOT table salt!

Upon observing a white spot on a fish or a fish brazing themself on various tank appurtenances:

Day 1
Increase the water temperature to 80F (26.6C)
Perform a 20% WC.
Add 1 Tablespoon of salt per 20 US Gallons of water (76L, 16.6 UKG)

Day 2
Increase the water temperature to 82F (27.7C)
Add 1 Tablespoon of salt per 40 US Gallons of water.

Day 3
Increase the water temperature to 84F (28.8C)
Add 1 Tablespoon of salt per 40 US Gallons of water.

Day 4
Increase the water temperature to 85F (29.4C)
Add 1 Tablespoon of salt per 40 US Gallons of water.

Days 5, 6, 7 and 8
Do nothing

Day 9
Perform a 20% WC.
Decrease the water temperature to 84F (28.8C)

Day 10
Perform a 20% WC.
Decrease the water temperature to 82F (27.7C)

Day 11
Perform a 20% WC.
Decrease the water temperature to 80F (26.6C)

Day 12
Perform a 20% WC.
Decrease the water temperature to 78F (25.5C).

Day 13
Return to the typical maintenance protocol.

No need to worry about the meds still being in the tank, the salt or heat will not effect it. If you are worried though you could always add carbon and do a water change. But if your still treating the fin rot then I would leave it in (If it was fin rot you were treating I can't really remember now..) Either way nothing to be worried about I've done it before with great results. Best of luck! :good:

ok that's great, is it ok to start with a larger water change? Just it takes ages to hoover my gravel :p my nozzle isn't the biggest thing ever.
Also....my aquarium salt i added the other day stated 1 tbsp for 19 litres so i did, do i add that, and then lessen it as it progresses, or start like you with half that amount and lessen as each day goes by?

I'm sure it would be fine to do a larger water change to start with, not to large though. I would just stick to the recommended amount of salt though, as I have never tried any other way. And it may effect it in some way. But I hope this helps. Good luck.

i now have a problem....my heater won't go above 26 degrees celcius....will this make the treatment less effective or just make it take longer?
Do i need to buy an additional heater??
Also the pimafix needs a water change after 7 days, and salt 9.....would changing it after 7 make it harder to cure too...or can pimafix go for 9?

thankyouuuu!!! :good:

The heat causes the cycle of the Ich to speed up. You can only kill Ich while its free floating, which is normally after 2-3 days, turning up the temp lowers that, so you can kill it quicker.
If you have another heater stick that in too and lower the other slightly, just watch the temp on a thermometer.

Problem is with medications that some stays in the tank and it can get too high a dosage, as with primafix. Personally I wouldnt use salt, so cant really answer your question. I try to use only 1 method at once, and stick to the instructions with water changes etc, but using salt and meds....I dunno sorry.

The salt should have no effect on the meds. This is the same method I used for treating ich even after meds were added to the tank. I would only be worried if you were adding another type of med. To me it doesn't sound nice adding a bunch of different types of chemicals to the tank. Salt is the more natural way...

Am going to replace my heater later today....I've heard wonderful things about treating ich with salt, and as yet my fish aren't coated in spots....just a few....the fighting fish probably now has about 8.....so yes off to get a better heater later....and i will get rid of my other on ebay or something :)
