Fish in cycling can work fine :) clearly the manner in which you approached it (not blaiming you, i understand you went on the advice of your pet store :)) is very harmful to the fish, the way in which you could of helped these fish (or can help if there still alive) is do carry out daily or even twice daily water changes, to keep ammonia and nitrite down :)

Hi Haylie,

I agree with SJ2K. Bad advice from the LFS is too common.

Do you have test kits to test for ammonia and nitrite? If so, you can monitor them and do water changes to keep the levels down. It's a bit easier on the fish if you do.

If you don't have test kits, i'd recommend that you buy some.

Cheers :good:

What those up there said

The trouble is, most people, like yourself only find this place after they've encountered a problem (usually involves the cycling process).

Maybe we should start some sort of petition or campaign aimed at aquarium manufacturers to include guides on cycling with every tank and filter? :dunno:

lol. They all (Well nearly) value the £££ too much. They want a quick easy sell.
I was in a shop on Sunday with a mate, this young lad bought a tank (60L) with some gravel and water conditioner and the famous 'quick start' bacteria and was told he could have the fish in the tank in an hour of doing that....what a load of cobblers ! I nearly said something but it wouldnt have gone down well really

i fell into this trap a few weeks ago, bought a new 240l tank gravel etc and after 48hrs transfered all my fish. i had some knowledge about the ammonia nitrite etc but didnt know about cycling the tank, was lucky i found this site the same day i added the fish and thanks to a lot of help from the site members am currently in the process of cycling my tank with 20 fish in it. I have yet to loose any fish but im sure if it wasnt for the advice from here i would have lost the majority of them.

its a long and painfull process testing the water conditions at least twice a day and often doing 50% water changes twice a day to reduce the ammonia to a safe level but its worth it to keep the fish as healthy and least stressed as possible.

if it wasnt for this site id have lost over £100 worth of my belovid fish so a bif thanks to the site :hooray:
