From the tap looks 10ppm
From the aquarium looks 30ppm

Bit of a noob question but i always thought the tap water would be higher not the other way around....

why would you think that? nitrate comes from ammonia breakdown.

the nitrogen cylce ADDS nitrate, it doesnt remove it
So how do some people get theres to zero?

plants.. mine are almost zero
Really? ive had java moss, moss balls and hairgrass for over a week now. Just done a 30% water change hence why thought i would test nitrate...

Mine was 60ppm before i had any sort of plants (if you call moss plants)

If your tank is heavily planted, you'll be adding nitrate to it anyway as its a macro nutrient required. Ie, potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen (as nitrate).
