its always been my dream to work in a pet store with fish in it because i love animals! but i fear im too young for people to take me on. how old is minimum you cna be to work in the UK

well its 15, but some people will take on 14 yr olds but i dont think 14 is legal.a few of my friends work at a pet store near me and get £10 a night ,i think they do 3 hours a night, and do that twice a week.but all they do is measure out food, they do nothing with the animals.it will be the same at most places.

Most places will only take on 16 year olds unless they, for instance, know you're good enough to work there. The only real jobs available to kids under 16 are papar rounds or jobs that pay rubbish. Like mine, I get £25 a term for working 1 hour twice a week, but hey, all I do is number, stamp and cover books. Look on the Government website or your local council website.

i just want to work with animals or near animals because i love themmy mate works ina chip shop and he gets £26 a week lol im just imaging what i could get wit that
hes only 13 :(

16.

do yourself a favour though, don't work at a chain store.
I disagree with you. Maidenhead is a good chain. Some of the stores let it down though but they are good on the whole. I know that each of the stores have regular inspection by the management to check all is okay.

Oh yeah, forgot Maidenhead :X I was thinking more Pets At Home, they seem to employ anyone and tell customers the exact opposite to the truth.

I would tend to wait and get a good P/T job at weekends etc at a reputable aquarist shop. Here you will gain much more knowledge than your Pets at Home establishments. Maybe you then can go on and take a course at Sparsholt college which is recognised by the ornamental fish industry. You are so young yet and have a lot to learn. I would much rather see someone take their time and do it properly and able to offer their customers help and advice based on the knowledge they have gained from academics rather than pet store managers. Take things slow, learn well and don't end up as another minion in a green sweatshirt with little or no background in what they are supposed to be doing.

me and my fried have been looking into starting our own store when weare 18 and have worked it out a £2,175 to get enough stuff to hold over 500 fish in stock and plenty of room for hardwre :S

I'm 14 and I work in a petstore, I had to be 14 to work there. Its just down the street from me, and I would go there atleast once a week so the owner and all the employes knew me pretty well, they also knew that I was interesting in animals/fish. I was actually asked to work there...which I thought was pretty cool. I get paid $7 an hour (CDN) and the minimum wage is $6.95. So far I've been working twice a week after school from 4:15-6:15 and Sundays from 12-4. I'll be working Saturdays too, oh yaa and its part-time. I love it, I get to work the till, bag stuff in the back, stock the shelves, clean cages, play with the animals, feed the fish, clean the betta bowls and help customers if I want so far.

Well I know most places are 16 in the Uk, however my brother started work in a store at 15, and I know several people who are working at 14/15 - The main reason why stores dont employ under 16's, is because they can't get insurance for children.

As for a pet store, if you did get a job, you would most likely just be stacking shelves, measuring out food bags, and maybe giving some general information to customers.

Thats a bit cheap. I guess you missed out shop rental, insurance, staff hire and the likes :/

My aunt earned a Furniture store in Minneapolis, and her rent was $8,000 a month.
Her store was open for like 4 years, but she went bankrupt.
It was a beautiful location though!
I estimate (my mom was a manager there) that it cost her about 11 grand on a month were she didn't re-stock much

Why not? I was thinking of working at this chain pet store that I all ways go to because they have knowledgeable people. Would it be better to work at this non chain store instead? Or do you think I should go for the shop that pays more?

Well, you would have to be located in an active city to make any real revenue really. However, if you have the right attitude and have a business know-how, you could quite possibly be successful.

As for £2,175, obviously that would just be a few tanks and shelves right? Not taking into account, rent costs, actual stock/livestock, etc etc.
