Don't know how to go about it
I mean on my 20 gallon Long I'm running 2 aqueon 20g whisper filters
i want to upgrade to two 30g hagen filters (Because I hear such rave reviews about them and I can control the current that comes out of them which sounds fantastic!) (Also should I just do 2 20 g hagen filters or do the idea of 2 30's)

Now I know as long as the filters I use are cycled I can put them into the new filter and boom goes the dynamite.

But I got an idea on how go about it a little more safely (In my opinion cause I'm a herp derp when it comes to technical stuff)

My idea is to keep both filters on the back of my aquarium running and put the other filter on the front of the aquarium (it'll look ugly) and let it run for about 2 months before discontinuing the use of one of the aqeuaon filters then repeat till I just have two hagen's running on the aquarium.

Does this sound like a decent idea? Or will I end up screwing something up.

There really isn't any need, aslong as you move the media over into the new filters, the tank/filters will have the same effect bacteria wise as if you were just running the original two.

No need to run all 4 together as the bacteria will just be spread between the 4 filters so you would still eventually need to move all the media into the 2 new filters anyways.... basically doing the same as if you just swapped the media over initially

So how should I go about doing that since the aqueon filter pads are shaped very differently then the hagen, Should I chop it up remove the plastic and activated carbon then shove the cloth material into the hagen filter?

Aslong as you can somehow get the media in to the filter without to many problems and it avoids the filters flow from being restricted, you can add them pretty much any way you want.

The carbon imo (as long as there is plenty of other media) can be left out, it's probably exhausted by now so all it's doing is adding an area for the colony to establish itself on...granted this seems counter productive because your essentially throwing bacteria away but there is so many reports that once it exhausts it throws whatever it's collected back out into the tank, this could cause potential problems.

Thanks so much for the advice I'm not so good when it comes to technical stuff like this glad I could come here and an awesome person like you could help me :D
Also yeah its definitely done with since these are the same filter pads I used when I started owning fish in January.
