i want to keep cichlids..

i want to keep a couple small cichlids...what are some good choices that are good for beginners and have good coloration?

If you want new world cichlids, then I suggest angels. If you want more aggressive ones, then perhaps convicts would suit your style more. They are also apparently very easy to breed.

i dont think i could afford to get a big enough tank for angels...i was thinkin a 10 gall.

The only cichlids you could keep in a tank that size are rams, kribs, or dwarf cichlids.

k, what type of dwarf would be good?
i want to keep rams, only they seem very small and i want a bigger fish.

How about an apistogramma agassizii?

Unfortunately, if you want bigger fish, you'll need a bigger tank than 10 gallons.

What David said - if you want a bigger fish, you have to have a bigger tank.

I have a 10g with a pair of rams and 5 neons and it's so much fun to watch. It's actually on our kitchen table and we all have so much fun sitting and just watching the rams and neons

A Pair of Rams is very nice for a 10 gallon tank. But Apistos would be better. They come in a more variety of colors and shapes. I usually can't find Apistos anywhere at LFS so I would recomend buying them from Aquabid.com if you can find any. They are very nice quality and checp there.

IMO it depends on the species of apisto that you go for the Cocatoo dwarves are awesome espeically the triple reds.

My dad has a Cockatoo, the males are awesome, females are bland

I think that all the females of all the apisto species are pretty bland but that is the way it is with many species of cichlids including africans.

You could always get 2 males, it would prevent competition over females, and of course unwanted spawning.
