I was wondering if gouramis would be ok with a german ram. If so I was thinking of getting two, making sure they were dwarf gouramis.

Yes but... What size tank? Do you want 2 males or a male/female pair? If it's the latter, a trio consisting of 1 male and 2 females is better. Also, I'd go for something like honeys (colisa chuna/sota - 1.5") or banded (colisa fasciata - 4") or thick-lipped (colisa labiosa - 3.5") instead as dwarfs (colisa lalia - 2") almost always carry diseases, to which most fish are not prone, but I've found that rams in particular often do get it. These all have similar temperaments and only deffer in their requirements due to size. All but the honeys do best with 10 gallons per male fish, honeys need 5 per male. In any of these species a ratio of 2 females to every male is reccomended but make sure that they have enough room as over-crowding, especialy with these gouramies, can cause stress that can lead to disease and eventualy death.

I was thinking of putting them in the 30 gallon, but I don't think I would have enough room. Can I only get one, the ram does ok alone after losing female ram.

You mean just one gourami? Yep, that would work but get a male. Females preffer to have some company.
