If you don't over light and over nutrient the tank it won't get algae. I don't have any plants in either of my tanks, and I never had algae in one of them and have a slight amount of algae in the other (which is acceptable to me). I don't see algae as a problem if you perform regular water changes and avoid 20 hours of light per day.
I agree Tahitian Moon sand is great (I have it in one of my tanks) though was about $20 for 20 pounds. Well worth it in my estimation.
