well thats answered one of my questions, thankyou

is that a black background on your tank or is it just the way the pics been taken? it looks great and been wondering what background to use on my tanks

yep its black background works great makes the fish and everything in
the tank stand out (reccomended)

When your using your syphon just just make little circle motions about 1" from the sandbed, this will cause the debris to float but the sand to stay where it is. This is becuase the debris is lighter than the compact sand meaning you can then just suck it up.

I've found it much easier to keep clean than gravel IME :good:

well black its gunna be then

i only just turned to sand and have been slighty wary of using the syphon, just imagined me sand ending up in the bucket but will defo try both ways ;)

if i were you i would try the syphon idea first then let the sand and sediments settle for a few hours
then give it a good mix not too much or your pump will suck it up lol.
good luck

I use ther syphon too but I take the hoover part off and just use the tube above the top of the sand and if some sand gets sucked up then so be it, I always have a spare small bag of sand if I ever need to top up, this is quicker than the swill method or the mix method.

your almost destined to lose some sand during water changes. It's not a huge deal really. As long as your carefull it takes a long time to lose a significant amount.

How do I put it into the water? I mean how long will it take. So is sand a preferred method?

put what in the water? The sand? Easy. rinse it well and put it in. Then put a plate on the sand and pour the water onto the plate.
