At last, my days of having sterile pets are over!

The hamsters failed to breed.
The budgies laid not one egg.
The chinchillas had one stillbirth and no more :(
The blimmin rabbits even failed! (two females, not surprising really)

However....I AM NOW A PROUD PARENT!

Six guppy fry are now darting around the breeding trap, after an hour of catching the female, recatching her, setting up the stupid tank (it broke mid-birth) and lots of swearing and encouragement on my part. I feel exhausted. She had 10, one was in the tank when I can down this morning, and two are currently hiding in the gravel after escaping the trap (who knew minute old fry could jump one inch?! And a mother in labour jump 3?!)

Evil panchax are glaring into the breeding tank at the moment, but they can't get to them. Picking up a spare small tank today hopefully, so they will have a nice calm place to grow up in.

I am so happy, I just had to share!!

I remember when I first bred guppies, it is a good feeling, especially once they start to grow and show colour and you think "I bred them"

My platy fry tried escaping my trap by climbing the corners! They would swim really fast and launch themselves up! Initially I was confused as to how I had a fry between the aquarium glass and the breeding trap it wasnt until I saw a couple of the other ones do it that I realised how he/she had got out! Its pretty amazing what a new born fry can do lol...... I didnt know they could swim so fast..... Yet alone evade the hunting skills of my betta who then nearly got himself traped and went off to sulk in the teapot after a failed attempt!

My little guppys also escaped could only capture 2 the other 5 hid in the plants after 2 week i let the other 2 free in the tank now all are ok (im lucky i have nothing to big in the tank to eat them) if your tank is well planted they will survive fingers crossed. Ivor

Only 3 out of 6 left alive this morning that I can see :( Was warned to expect that though!

sorry to hear about your loss, but dont be disheartened as you will probably have more little ones on the way again in about a month and you will soon no doubt be over run by them!

Hopfully some are in hiding, like i said before 5 of mine escaped and i could not catch them, so next day went out and bought a large silk plant for them to hide in they are all doing fine. make sure to feed them 3-4 times daily with baby food. Ivor

Is it really necessary to feed them that often I can't feed my fry that much as I'm at work most of the day so they just get fed on a morning and evening Ok I give them as much as they will eat but the ones in my community tank well I don't have any means of ensuring that they get anything! But they must be finding something in there to eat otherwise they would be dead by now!

Argh is said that horrible word again!

Hi i was reading a this topic http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=122073 i think you must have read it to, i Think it was Annastasia she feeds around 5 times a day and tank212 feeds flake food 3-4times a day. Ive been feeding my fish 3 pinches of flake food and 3 pinches of fry food 3 times a day. i also read somewhere that the fry can feed of the smallest of material on the bottom of the tank, so perhaps there getting an extra feed here and there  Ivor

Sounds a bit excessive five times a day but who knows? Then again I suppose a fish in the wild would just eat until its full if there was plenty of food about and then when food was low they would just run off the fat stores theyd created! I don't think mine are starving so will just feed them a few extra feeds at the weekend just to keep them ticking over

Hi just read this post again http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=122073 i think Annastasia only feeds fry food twice a day. heres her schedule 9am: Flakes 12pm: Bloodworms/Brine Shrimp OR flakes, 3pm: Fry food 6pm: Fry food 9pm: Bloodworms/Brine Shrimp. perhaps ive been overfeeding mine :*) hope not, perhaps someone could clarify this for us. Ivor

I might try them at 6.30/7.00am for breakie, then they would have to wait until I finish work so between 4.30/5.30pm depending on day and I suppose one last feed before lights out! And a couple of extra at weekend! Hey who knows they might end up super fry lol...........

God I want to go home oh well only an hour to go :D
