i walked into the room today and looked at the tank and see my male chasing my huge female rosy barb around the tank, he is like pushing(?) on her underside with his head, spinning around her, kind of trying to get her still....are they spawning? i jsut did a water change cuz i am treating ich and i think that might trigger them to spawn...i dont know tho i havent spawned fish before...just livebearers :fun:

anyone have any suggestions?

the temp is about 75-76 F and that is with my heater turned up all the way

thanks!

Barbus conchonius is one of the easiest of the egglaying fish to spawn and raise. That said, if the fish are in a community tank, or left with the parents, the chances of getting a result are very low. The fish are too fond of eating their own eggs, and fry if any eggs were lucky enough to fall out of reach of the other fish.

To breed egglayers, you really need a seperate breeding set-up. Hatched egglayer fry are much less developed then livebearer fry. With livebearers, a thickly planted tank will allow some fry to evade capture, egglayer fry are just not that smart, they are bearly capable of survival on their own and are a soft touch for predators.

What you have described though, is classic spawning behaviour. The males often show enhanced colour during this phase - good to see. Perversley, they often show better colour when 2 males square off to each other and do the "spiral dance" trying to intimidate each other. Another feature of conchonius and many other flattened barb species is the presence of small fleshy growths around the head, "tubercules".
