His mouth was black the same as the rest of him, today I notice it's grey and rotten looking. Pics are uploading now. If it is, which med do I need please, as the shops shut soon. I have myxazin, that's all. Thanks

Sorry they're not great-I'm panicking :(

I've gone in with the myxazin. It says for fin and body rot? Got some slightly better pictures

:-(

Once the mouth start to rot is usually sometimes best to put the fish out of its misery.
Myxaxin by waterlife and pimafix.

Thanks Wilder, he died anyway :( So fast! Do you think it was mouthrot? Could you speculate at all where it might have come from?
The last inhabitant of the tank was a betta who was fine until I sucked him up the siphon and injured him. He lived 3 more days then died with no sign of anything wrong.
Since then, I kept the filter alive with ammonia.
I then added some cat litter under the sand and rescaped, then put this betta in. I added some brown 'gunk' the seller gave me to speed up healing of the split fins.
So I'm thinking 3 options-
1. He already had an infection
2. it came from the cat litter
3. It came from the gunk

Thanks for the link, I like to know the science behind things :) Of the causes listed though, none applied in this case
Sudden increases in water temperature.
Overstocking.
Infrequent water changes.
Low water oxygen (O2) content.
Elevated nitrite levels.
Uneaten food in the tank, which supports growth of Flexibacter.

He was alone in a 5 gall tank with fresh water added the day I got him. No ammonia or nitrite while I had him and no uneaten food.
Anyway, I'd be very interested in your opinion on how to make the tank safe for another inhabitant. I started a thread about it here. I'd very much like to avoid starting again with the cycle, although obviously I will if that's necessary. For the moment, I'm just continuing with the myxazin.
Thanks :)

Myxazin and just water changes once the med course has finished and black carbon.
Good Luck.
When you buy new betta might sure he's in good health. Has bright colours and he's not thin or bloated.

Oh good, so not a full strip down. That's a relief! I had thought about carbon, but not sure where it would fit in the filter. I'll start another thread for that...
