the "flowering" plant is on the left hand side.

thanks

Singing to them is good apparently ;)

do flowers of this kind need to be pollinated? ie does he need to add pollen from another plant to get it to reproduce?

No amazon swords as far as im aware can be split at the crown to create mulitiple plants, not sure about the flowers, maybe thats how they reproduce in the wild?

Are you talking about the daughter plants? They're cut off and replanted in the substrate when they get bigger. It's somewhat similar to a rhizome.

well this plant has a big thing coming off it which wont stop growing and its also split down the crown or something. i only bought one and after a year or 2, there's two of them! one smaller than the other though

My Echinodorus has recently flowered, however, I cannot provide ideal conditions in which the flowers can pollinate efficiently, as I have a tight fitting lid, but have left a small gap which the flower grows through. Most Echinodorus plants reproduce using two methods, first by forming runners (which you have already witnessed) and by forming new plantlets above the water. In my case new flowers are forming daily, although they seem to die off within a couple of days or so.

Hmm, strang. I didn't think swords did anything more then grow big. I have had mine for over 7 years I think now and it has never tried to flower or multiply or anything. Just grows new leaves after I pick the dead or damaged ones off the base.

You can see my sword here.

Thanks :)

I find the swords are very forgiving in the sence that you can move them from one tank to another or move them around the tank and uproot them and they show very little if any signs of I suppose, shock.

I don't put in c02 in my water and I think I have less then 2watts /gal, maybe 1watt/gal if that. Swords seem to be the only plant I can keep :) I have another one, small baby, about 4 inches or so in a 5 gal with baby mbunas.

It is similar with my swords. I have a simple pea gravel substrate, no CO2, no ferts and no lighting yet all my Echinodorus species thrive and my Java fern dies.
