I just finished cycling a 10 gal tank that I intended to use as a back up in case my 29 gal had problem. It has an under gravel filter and a 30 gal exterior filter. I'm a fanatic about my water, I do bi-weekly water changes and test almost daily. I bought 6 red eye tetra's, they looked so small at the pet store but in the tank they look so much bigger! I don't want to cramp the poor things so I don't know whether to put them in 29 gallon and run the risk of stressing it out or just take them back. I would appreciate on this, thank you very much.

What are the dimensions of the 29g?
What fish are already in the 29g (species and numbers)?

There would be no harm in using the 10g as a quarantine tank for these Red Eye Tetras for a few weeks if the filter/tank is definitely cycled. If they eat well and show no signs of illness, you can later add them to the 29g, providing on the above questions.

Long term these tetras are going to need at least a 90cm long tank, as adults they are quite chunky ~7cm fish (plus tail fin).

That's what I was afraid of, I specifically asked the person at pet smart if they would do okay in my 10 and it was a resounding yes! The tank has cycled very nicely and my filtration system seems to be optimal.

I have 6 black skirt tetras, two golden apple snails and five albino cory's in the 29 gal. I don't know how the black skirts would get along with the lamp eyes...I've heard they like to nip. They're neat little fish and I would hate to stress them by taking them back but I don't want to create a bigger problem. I shouldn't have taken the word of the person at pet smart, I should have checked it out before hand but I really wasn't sure what I wanted at the time.
PH is 6.8,
zero ammonia
zero nitrites
barely a trace of nitrates
@75.0 degrees
My 29 gal has virtually the same results but for about 5.0 ppm nitrates

The dimensions of 29.... 30" long 12" front to back and 18" deep.

I added the lamp eye's to the 29 gal tank and they seem to be doing very well. The lamp eye's seem to mind their own business and school together. When I first put them in, a skirt nipped at one but that's the only aggression I've seen. I have over ten days to decide whether to keep them, so I guess I'll just watch closely and see what happens.
