Sorry, I'm still up!! Good water tests then. Some people have ammonia and nitrates in their water which can cause problems. Hopefully the ph swing was just down to the ammonia as Wilder suggests. Just keep an eye on everything but I think you're definately in the right direction now. Welcome to TFF by the way!! Anything else, just shout.

Ha, I know how that is. I say 100 times I am going to bed, but I never make it. Thanks again for all the help. He is swimming about a little bit now.

hmmm i waited till my tank was well established best thing to do for cichlids i think is to wait a while before getting some...hope things go well!

problem with waiting 4 days before adding fish is that your bacteria will have died off if not fed with ammonia, they start to die after 12 hrs so while you got the right idea unfortunately you've probably un-done your hard work by waiting. :/

you are now cycling your tank with fish, if you read this thread it should explain more and tell you what to do

Great thread Miss Wiggle, a good reference for cycling. But I'm struggling to see what you say in there to do tha isn't already said in this thread?

She just backing up whats been said that the bacteria colony died off without fish.
Add flakes if you don't have fish to keep the bacteria alive.

So far so good. He is still doing good. swimming around, eating, etc. I just checked my levels again and the ammonia is 1.0 so I am doing another water change, everything else is perfect. I also took out a couple plants that were from my brothers other tank. They were pretty nasty when I got them. I cleaned them up good, but I am wondering if the ammonia is not coming off them. Hopefully it will start going down. I can not find the stuff you put in the tank to neutralize the ammonia. I have been to 3 pet stores today with no luck.

If plants are rotting yes they can cause bad water quality.
Just keep up with the water changes.
Good luck.
