well i was at a friends house when i noticed the his brother who moved away to school a while back still had fish in a tank is his room. All that was left was a dempsey that was about 5-6 inces. the water was in horrible condition and the fish was deffinetley very sick. I took him home and have been trying to nurse him back to health. he has started eating and swimming much more in the past week and a half. i have him a small tank by himself right now but plan on adding him to my 135 gal with my oscar and plec soon. his fins are extremely tattered and i was wondering what i can do if anything to help them grow back somewhat normally. any help would be great.

Well we can't see your picture. And I don't know about putting him with your oscar. But how big is your oscar? And the plec? And as for healing maybe put some extra stress coat in there, and feed him good foods.

I wouldnt put him in with any thing if I were you. I tried this yesterday and needles to say it didnt work out at all. I put the pleco in with one of them yesterday and it wouldnt stop picking on the pleco till I had to take him out..

For the healing all he needs is pristine water - in the small tank make sure you do lots of water changes and he'll be back to normal in no time.

Be very careful adding the JD to your Oscar tank. In a tank that big it's certainly possible, but once these types of fish establish a tank on their own (your Oscar) it can be messy adding new fish. I highly recommend using a divider to let the fish get used to each other.

freddy is right, I have also found that besides pristine water that a half dose of stress coat and melafix helps also. but it isn't nessicary

thanks for all the advice the oscar in the tank is around 7 incehs or so and he has had a jd with him in this tank before that was my fathers that he had for quite a bit of time and ended up dying of old age i guess so i dont think it will be a real problem from the oscar i am more worried about the jd goin after the oscar. well i will try it but if it doesnt seem to worki have a 55 that i can cycle and put him in.

A friend of mine has a 120 g tank with a big oscar, i decent sized Manganese (sp?), a good sized pleco, a JD, 3 big tin foil barbs, and a Lima Cat i believe. So it's possible. Good luck.
