She said there were atleast 20 adults, which is horribly overstocked for a 10 gallon, consider if you go by the 1" per gallon rule, you should only have 5 guppies in a 10 gallon. Even if they are babies, 500 of them could pollute that tank pretty quickly. And thats just sick, having 50 almost 1" fish in a 10 gallon for almost a year. Thats worse them how some petstores keep their fish.

Are you saying you can do better? How long have u been keeping fish? how many have died in a year? it's all about skills, the 1 inch per gallon rule is just a rule of thumb, experienced fish keeper dont need that. The 3 guppies that died were female guppies..makes you wonder..maybe they died from the stress of giving birth.

I'm sorry I flipped out, but...500 guppies in a 10 gallon? You'd have to be nuts to not think that was a LOT of guppies.

Are you saying you can do better?

Ummm...yah, I guess considering I wouldn't put 50 guppies in a 10 gallon. :dunno:

How long have u been keeping fish?
About 5 years.

how many have died in a year?
not too sure...when I first started out I had some die when cycling a tank (didn't know anything about that) but now since I know about all that stuff I haven't had a fish die in quite a while.

I honestly dont think a 14 year old can do better, how do you think people breed fish? and my 10g has a 40G filter on it. Not everyone has to follow the 1in per gallon rule.

and i didnt "PUT" 50 guppies in a 10G i've been breeding them

although it is debatable that a 14 year old can keep fish well, i doubt it, how can they take care of fish if they cant even take care of themselves?

That tank was filthy, I don't understand how anyone who owns fish could let it get so bad.

I rescued fish once from a garage sale I went to, I bought an empty tank from the lady and she then tells me she has some fish if I want them, she was keeping them in this big coffee jar type thing, she had 3 danios, 3 white cloud mountain minnows, a goldfish and a Rainbow fish in there, I took them home and rehoused them. The Rainbow fish died but when I got it it had a big brown mark on it's side, maybe a disease or old injury?.

The rest of them are still alive though.

I'm amazed someone would keep fish in a jar, especially since they had empty tanks they could of used.

Well I gave a lot of them away to my neighbor. Then the lfs took three hundred of them. So I got the rest I think about 158. I have to recount them. Here is what I have done so far. I have two 20 gallon tanks and 2-10 gallon ones. I am going to seperate them males in one tank and females in the other and the two 10 gallon tanks are for the rest of the babies. I should be finished by Sunday. Then I will be posting pictures of them. Some of them will still have to be in the hospital tank for a while due to fin rot and things like that. Some of them I am going to drop in clove oil because they have drospy. I dont want them to suffer any longer. I think they are 25 that has drospy I will have to count again to make sure. This has been a nitemare. I felt so sorry for them. But they are nothing else I can do. I could try to treat them but I think I am fighting a losing battle with the sick ones. Poor things some of them are really pretty guppies. I have some ph issues that I am in the process of getting it up to where it belongs. But this is where I stand with them so far.. :dunno: :( :( :(

WOW! You are amazing, you should be happy just to be able to get them back into a nice new environment even if you lose some of them, it is really too bad though :( :( You have tried everything and that is awesome.
This story really makes me realize how many people out there probably buy fish without knowing anything ( including myself a few years ago). I can't imagine how many fish go through terrible times but nowadays there are probably too many fish on the market so they go to all kinds of homes because they are also not worth a lot anymore. :( :( I think you did a great job:)

I am not trying to be controversial here - but I do think that comment is just a little patronising. Also you cannot always infer that age corresponds to responsibility. We have a lot of young members on this forum and I think we should be encouraging them instead of belittling them like that. Everyone here should be treated with respect. Just my tuppence worth :)

Pick me! Pick me! I'm 14!!!! Wheee......
I can keep fish prefectly well, thank you very much. Almost all the deaths I've had are due to diseases from lfs's (ie, NTD). Whoever it is that is being rather annoying and pretty much saying the tank wasn't awful is being a troll IMO as you can hardly compare breeding guppies (where the tank is clean, the guppies are healthy, the fry are 'meant' to be there) with this, which is some one ramming a hell load of guppys in what is quite a small tank, not cleaning it and expecting them to be fine. Not really comparable, are they?

im 14.and i look after my animals better than some 50year olds

i'm 14
I give away my knowladge and help people double, sometimes triple, my age.
I've never had any disease spread through my tank excpet for one case of pop eye on a ram that happened while i was on holiday, ive bread 5/6 species are fish, i do water changes every thrid day on four tanks,i've set up numerous tanks up by myself, and the only fish that have died in my tank were due to jumping or adults eating fry.
I was hired and offered jobs at some LFS because of my dedication to my fish, so Kevin007, think before you speak. 14 year olds arn't babies, we can take care of ourselves.

Anyway, back to topics

Well done Angel Lady for rescuing and giving the guppies new homes
Keep us updated

Meg, do remember when you you consider the length of a fish, it's only the actual body (mouth to base of tail) - not the tail. I have never seen a 2 inch guppy - ever

You also consider the waste level. A guppy is a tiny waste producer. You can't possibly compare inch for inch to say a plec.

I've seen lots of 2 inch guppies. 2 inches isn't a massive size- its only about 5cm. Small guppies can be stunted- often by being inbred far too much. Yes, they are small waste producers, however they are also very weak. And continually prodcing fry. The huge amount in the tank makes a lot of waste compared to the levels there normally is. And I'm sure there were many dead guppies (or were that have rotted)- rotting fish guts produce a lot of ammonia.

I'm not going to argue about the size of a guppy, but I would be interested if someone could show me a 2 inch (mouth to base of tail) guppy. Granted females are generally larger - your average guppy is no larger than 1.5 "

Guppy sizes

If I could find somewhere to buy guppies that lived over a few weeks, I'd take you up on that challenge :p And if I had another tank.... Hmmm.... Well, just watch this space :)

yup, i have seen a 2 inch guppy, mainly females though
Bloo, just because you haven't seen one, doesn't mean we havn't/can't :p

I think there was at least one that big at my lfs, I'll ask if I can take photos next time I stop in!

Of course, I could be wrong. Might not have been that big ^_^
