Hello. Apparently platties wont breed unless the male likes the females colour, and vise versa I assume. I dont' know if mine are pregnant. THey are a little plump, but I've never one seen the male chase the female like they do.
MY females are orange with black fins and tales and my male's silver with black fins and tale, and the bit of his body before the tail is red.
Does anyone know if they're suitable colours to breed 2gether or should I get a matching male and females to match my male????
P.S would Realllllyyyy really like to breed them. Cute.

iv never bred plattys befor but i can give u a lil advise. look at the females from above the tank, if they look kinda squareish then they are pregnant.

another reson they might not breed is water condistion, check the water and tempreture.

or, maybe they are all the same sex? send me some pictures.

hey, They are deffinately male and females. I've spent hours on the net neally every night learning how to sex and breed all my fish. There was one site with pictures of the male with his gonopodiam and the female with her fan-shaped fin. I've got two females (which are fatter than the male with his gonopodium)and 1 male. It's my first time breeding any fish. They may be pregnant, I'm just impatient and I want them to have babies now.
I cant do photos cause I don't have a camera (which I also need to get).
I dont' know what pH, nitrates etc etc are, I've never done tests. I'm not sure how. basically, all my fish are still alive and happy. my temperature is 27C/80F - does it need to be higher/lower. it used to be 30C.
Is it really absolutely necessary to do all the tests when my fish are obviously happy.
I do 50%apx water change about every week to 10 days (on my day off from work). I don't ever let the water get too dirty.
If this answers anything, please help me :D :D :D

Hey there! Everything sounds right to me. The descriptions you gave sounded like the right sexing job. Usually platies will mate soon after they are put together, or a couple of days later. Usually within a month after breeding they release young. Good luck and keep us posted! :)

In my 10 gal. I have a pair of blue platty's and 2 red male platties...I have figured their sex out.now...the female has had 2 fry's since April and so far they are all red except for 1 that I can tell is blue like her. The blue male has been stuck by her every moment of the day so I figured the fry would have been blue..but no!!! I do have alot of coverage for the fry and live plants.

i bought a pregnant platy from the pet shop, and she had about 50 babies. Since then the babies have bred together so I've had more babies. All I really find that you need is clean water and a happy environment for them. They will generally breed if they are happy :D

It helps to have good conditioned fish, and if you keep the same colours you would probably get some nicer strains of colour ( I don't know much about this though!) When mixing colours it's ok but you could end up with odd looking fish. These are ok though as long as you're not using them for shows or hoping to sell them for lots. I sell mine to the local fish shop.

Hope that helps a bit! I don't know that much about them, but they are reasonably easy to breed if happy!

Platys will breed regardless of colours but i must say in all my experience of breeding platys, they seem the most pickiest when it comes to breeding with each other... Unlike men when drunk on a saturday night rofl.

I've actually had little problem breeding them... color doesn't matter to them.

Naw, don't get matching males and females! Then you know what they're going to look like. That's no fun. Breed the funky colors. I do that with guppies and I get the most GORGEOUS combinations! :D
