Ok the script so far is as follows;

A fgew weeks I posted a thread about my two gouramis starting to breed, I believed that I had two red honey gouramis, 1 male, 1 female. But it turnned out after some help from sylvia that I had two males but of different types of gourami (1 red gourami) (1 red honey gourami).

But last night I witnessed some weird behaviour, The large gourami has a bright blue dorsal fin, which stretches back to his tail, anyway he has built a massive nest at the far left of my tank. My other gourami (that I once thought to also be a male) started to come over and they both started this weird flappy dance, then they intertwined and started to shake at each other. Then they would both go up to the nest and sit there for a while before repeating the process.

The red honey that I have, is red all over apart from a patch at the back which is going black and its anal fin is going yellow, I thought that this was a male due to the colouring, but I was looking on the net this morning and the colours on a male gourami are much more vibrant than this and cover alot more of the fish.

So now I think its a female.

The only reason I dont think they are both males is the fact that they aren't attacking each other.

Ok... so it could be that your gourami are breeding. Am not sure what your question is though...?

I was adamant that I had two males, as I was sure the female didn't colour up at all. plus the dorsal fins on both gouramis are pointed at the back and stretch to the tail fin.

They are probably a male and a female. Otherwise they wouldn't be acting this way. Both the male and female have extended dorsal finns in the dwarf gourami family.

EDIT: PS: Dig your new sig made me do this : R O F L M A O;
roling on the floor laughing my ass off

I replied in the anabantoids section to your original post but I have to add here that, actualy, there is a difference in the dorsal fins of both dwarf gouramies and honey gouramies. However, it is a less reliable way of sexing them than, say, three-spots (where the difference is very obvious).

Your fish are deffinately breeding though (or trying to) so you must have a male and female.

Hi chishnfips :)

Most of the dwarf gouramis that are sold today are not natural fish. Rather they have been selectively bred for color. This means that there is no standard of the species at this time. What is sold under one name today, may or may not look identical the next time you see it.

The natural dwarf gourami looks like this and the female, while much less flamboyant than the male, is similar in coloration. Unless seen in the right light, she often looks silvery or gray. During courtship her colors will darken and intensify, as will his.

Really disappointed that they have so many stripes. Mine are almost half silver half red gold not as lovely as your picture. My Goldem Gourami is beautiful like this its brown and gold.
So we don't really know what we are buying Sad. Feel cheated but got attached to what I have to look after.

cheers for the replies guys, it's annoying that you put trust into a shop to give you what you want and get something completley different, they aren't even the same type. :S

But I suppose thats just the crack.
