I'm planning on getting about 70lbs for my 55G tank. I see there are different names like baserock and reef rock and such. How much of each is ideal? I'm assuming base is just for the bottom to support the reef rocks but it really doesn't help the water quality, correct?

Correct i tock mine out!!! Would rather have L/R!!

For a 55g, you want about 25kg minimum of the reef rock (the rule of thumb is 1kg of rock to 10l of water (I've assumed UK gallons here for easier maths with the aquarium calculator down), though as with any type of filtration, more is better. I have about 10kg in my 70l, and it looks rather insignifficant. I'm now waiting for some mature small chunks of liverock to come by at work, at the same time as some cash... I'd like to go to 14kg, double the recomended minimum, and they I'll feel I've got a decent rock stack :good:

usually 1 kilo per 2.2 gallons is about right.
Cured live rock will mean your tank cycles quicker.
Uncured will take ages but its cheaper and you can get cool hitchhikers, not always good guys though

do I need any base rock or just get all live cured rock?

Live Rock all the way mate.

Also make sure the rock is actually cured !!!! even though it is in the display tanks at the LFS, it may not mean it has cured. Could only be in there for a couple of days, so you need to ask the question..

Good luck !!!

One of the best things is getting hitch hikers, but only if they are good guys. I had a Mantis Shrimp in mine, killed half the tanks occupants before i got it out...

If you fill a tank with properly cured live rock then the tank is instantly cycled.

aye, so long as you can keep it in water in transit.
Nope

I've never transported mine in water and always stocked immediately with no problems. Provided you aren't travelling a long way (30 mins to an hour) the moisture in the bag and on the rock will keep the rock fine.

Agree with Andy on the LR transport issue.

Anymore than an hour or more though, will only bring dramas.

And you have to be able to trust the shop on the Cured stuff... Maybe it's not really all that cured, then you could have a spike. The many unknowns are why newbies are usually advised to take caution :)

You could of caurse ask them to show test results for ammonia and nitrite. On a purchase of over £100, it is not an unreasonable ask. If both are zero, it's cured, first assuming it's been there for more than a few days
