I use it in all my tanks – even freshwater community ones. I know it hardens the water, but I also use a lot of bogwood, which softens the water, so I guess I get a balance – a good neutral ph, anyway!

The beauty of tuffa is that is very soft - you can saw a lump in half with an ordinary wood saw. I use aquarium sealant to glue it all over the back and side walls of my tanks. Some bits stick out farther than others, giving ledges and crevices, and being so porous, mosses and other plants can easily be grown on and into it.

Additional benefits...
It looks natural.
I hollow out several pieces to a shell before attaching it, drill or gouge out small (or large) opening in the front as an entrance/exit – giving an instant cave. [Can be at the bottom, or near the surface for those that prefer it that way.]
You can dig planting pockets into it at various heights, which will hold growing medium and plants at the right level.
You can drill a vertical hole through it, to hide away that always-unsightly down pipe for the underground filter.
Shrimps love it, so those sometimes hard-to-see little buggers are always visible as they scuttle about.
Snails love it. (OK, so not everyone loves snails – but I do..!)
If there are any bits of it you don't like after a while, you can easily remove them with a penknife.
I cannot attribute one single fish death to the use of tuffa.

Testimonial – my twenty-year-old goldfish recommends it highly...
