I had to take pity on this little chap,
he is now happily swimming in my 42G

As far as i can tell it is just a genetic abnormality and he is healthy in all other aspects,
eats like a trooper.
I got him free as the shop had him so far for 6 months with no-one even interested.

I would be careful with that fish. I felt sorry for a long-finned zebra Danio that looked to have the same condition as your fish. The employee at the LFS told me he was just old. During the first water change a couple days after he was added, he went up and died for no discernible good reason. On taking him back to the shop, the owner who wasn't there before told me the fish had TB and could have easily given it to every other fish in the tank. After some online research, it seemed that he was correct.

Anyway, this might not apply to your fish but it's something you might keep in mind.

The spinal Deformities are not indicative of TB, They are however generally indicative of inbred fish that are systemically weaker and prone to all sorts of maladies, including an incresed susceptability to bacterial infections.

However It will not be breeding and I doubt it could have found a better Home than with Paul here.
