Thursday morning, the 20th, I found one of my girls dead. I'm pretty sure she died of parasites. I was just about to treat the tank when I found her dead.

Now today, after I finished water changes (100% water changes) and went to feed the fish, one of my boys is dead. I don't know, but the only thing I can think of that would have made him die would be if I forgot to put in dechlorinater. Which I highly doubt happened, but I suppose it could have.

But would a betta die with in two hours if I forgot to put in dechlorinater?? He was fine when I was doing the water change. He seemed fine when I put him in the clean water, after aclimating him. I have no clue what would have killed him unless I did forget. :/ :-(

He was so gorgeous too... :-(

Well, this was him. His name was Jack. Goodbye Jack. :rip:

I intentionally left out dechlor after doing a 50% water change on a tank full of angel fry. After watching for 2 hours without noticing any problem, I got bored, added dechlor, and went to do something else. My water contains chlorine & chloramine.

Watch for cross contamination between containers, it's something I am always careful of between tanks. It's the main reason I don't set up a centralized filtration system.

Nothing that I use with my fish (their tanks, cups, plants, thermometer) gets use with more than one fish.

All of my fish are in their containers only. I never switch or share the containers without thoroughly cleaning them out. I don't use nets with my bettas. I always catch them with their own individual cups. They don't share cups. And I only have three thermometers. I have them spread out through out my betta line, because I don't have heaters with them, so basically, I don't need to have thermometers in all of them.

So, it couldn't have been contamination from another betta.

So sorry for your loss. Jack was a beautiful fish. My condolences.

Thanks guys. I was really attached to him even though I only had him for a few weeks. He had such a cute personality. I'm going to miss him.

The girl that died, I was suppose to send her to a new home because she was too agressive for me to keep in my big tank. She was picking on the other girls and I didn't have space to seperate her. But she was pretty cool too. :/

I got them both from Walmart, so that's probably why they died.

Sorry to hear about your bettas, fuman_chica. I know they will be missed. Sounds like you did everything right...I've gotten bettas from Walmart before and had them die after several weeks. Sometimes they develop symptoms and sometimes they don't. :/

Yeah... I'm making a point not to buy any more fish from Walmart. I've said it before, but this time, I mean it. I have a car (my husband's) that I can use now, so if I'm going to get more, I will travel to go get some good ones. I can't get attached to another one just to have it die in a couple weeks. It's way too stressful.

Sorry about your fishes. It was probably the lfs you got them from. I had a really bad spell with mine from one shop but they seem better now. I lost my Amos the other day that I got from Jobys and I really cried, mostly from frustration that I couldnt save him, even though I tried everything. I think sometimes we forget that they are quite delicate with water conditions and what have you. We can only do our best and we all do that or we wouldnt be posting on this forum. :good:

yeah...I have a feeling there was something wrong with Jack before I did the water change. I don't think that it was me forgetting dechlorinater. I don't think he would have died within the two hours if I did. And one of the other fish would have gotten some of the water without dechlorinater because of how I do my water changes.

But he had no signs of illness at all. He was alive and perky when I started the water changes. When I put him in his new water he was fine. But when I went back to feed them a little while later, he was dead. Floating vertical. No discoloration or anything. But his gills were sticking out a bit...and his beard was sticking out a tiny bit too...like he was starting to flare or something... maybe he had a heartattack... I don't know. But it makes me upset. :-(

Sorry to hear this. :rip: Jack and little girlie.

Some fish are just born unhealthy, they may be inbred or just from weak stock. Unfortunately I don't think Walmart would take this into account much.

I hope no more get sick or die! (Knocks wood!)

Thank you.

My new boy is helping a little to move past Jack dying. And I didn't get him at Walmart, so hopefully he'll live for a LONG time. :)
