My jack dempsys. I have two each one of them is in a 55 gallon tank to thierselves and I was wondering if I could but something in with them..

I'm no expert so I could be wrong
but isn't the min for one JD 55 gall,
making you overstocked already?

is that not what I said?
maybe you articulated it better than myself

With more than adequate filtration and plenty of hiding spots, I have had great success with keeping other fish with the JD. There again, my JD has always been with other fish and I think that makes a difference. Imagine yourself always living alone, and suddenly, you have 5 people move in with you!

Really, it depends on the temperament of your JD. From what I have seen they have different personalities. Where mine isn't aggressive at all, yours very well may be. It's all trial and error. Most large cichlid keepers have what they call dithers in their tanks. Hatchets are commonly used and other fast moving tropicals. Bear in mind these fish may get eaten or beat up, depending on your JD.

I got what you ment "The-Wolf"

The minamal for one Jack Dempsy is 55G, by itself. Being on its own, a 55G.

ok it has taken me three times reading it.
I now understand what was being asked.

(goes away  )

I know the what it has to have for the fish. I was just thinking it looks awful lonely in that big tank all by its self. It is only two inches long and I was wanting to put something else in with him. But if I cant. Then I guess it will have to live a lonely life. It is just a thought. I still want to add another fish. What about a female can they live together??

Since they're juveniles, you might be able to add a cichlid of similar temperment (shy, aggressive). A Salvini or Rainbow cichlid perhaps. If they grow up used to one another, it might be ok. I don't think I'd try it with an adult. I'd also consider adding whatever hiding spots I could, including lots of silk plants or java fern attached to rocks/wood. Sexing your two JDs would help too, as males tend to be the more aggressive.

Hope that helps, AL! Good luck!

How do I sex these little fellows??I know they both are the same so that means either I have two boys or two girls. One of the two..
