Well I have been planning to setup a Juwel 180 litre aqaurium, and have a breeding group of six c.aenues. I was slowly saving, and after christmas I should have had enough to buy everything needed. However, my mum got talking to my uncle on the phone about Christmas, and apparently, he is willing to buy the whole setup including the corys for me! He said he will send the money down to me (From Scotland) to purchase the tank, but he will buy the corys from up there (he knows a private breeder, who sells proven breeding pairs apparrently) and he is going to send them via next day delivery through the post, two weeks after I get my tank setup.

I really can't wait to get started! I am going up there for christmas, and he is going to send the check before that so I have chance to buy the tank and set it up before I leave for Scotland (22nd Dec), so I won't have to wait quite so long after I get back! And whats even better than this, he has promised to take me to the breeder to pick out the 6 I want!

I was going to take them back with me on the plane from scotland to birmingham airport, but the airlines do not let fish travel apparently, and the tank will still need to be cycled for another 3-5 days so they would have nowhere to be kept.

Exciting.
So wait, I'm confused.
Your uncle is ending you money from scotland, then he's going to buy you corys so you can put corys in the tank he just bought from you?

nice.
i wish my family were more active in the fish but alas..
i have to buy all my own and nobody else knows anything about them.
in fact my mother had adopted the "just add fish and water" attitude but i put a stop to that.
sounds like one cool uncle fishkeeper,

He is sending me the money to buy the tank so I can start it cycling, as I am going to scotland to visit him during the 22nd-29th december, so it will only need a few more days cycling afterwards.. I think..

Anyway, he knows a private breeder, so im going to pick the 6 I want - from confirmed breeding pairs, and because I can't take them on the plane, hes sending them next day delivery through the post to me. :)

Hope that clears everything up..

Just make sure that your cycle is complete before your uncle sends you them. There is no set amount of days it will take for your tank to be completely cycled. A 180 could take 10 days for one person and 24 for another!

So just take care & good luck!

Ok thanks, ill make sure i ring him before he sends, as he has a few quarentine tanks he can keep them in if my tank isn't ready. I am guessing a just test water levels etc, to know when my cycle is complete? :)

lucky you ive asked my mom for a new set up for x-mas and it was no no and no again so ive said fish tank or nothing but its still a no.good luck with it anyway.

To know that your tank has cycled, you should have witnessed an ammonia spike, followed a day or two later by a nitrIte spike, with an eventual nitrAte spike.
All the while with regular water changes, and ammonia feeding (depending on your method of cycling), and making sure at the end that all your stats are acceptable (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0-20 nitrate).

There is a diary of the days and readings in the posted topics i believe, with the articles on cycling a tank.

Be very careful. Cories are particular about the water they are in. While I don't have any experience of c.aenues, I imagine they are along the lines as the pandas and c. Jullis we have. If you have bad water, they will suffer.

Good Luck, and I hope you get some results!

Ok thanks, I think the breeder will give me a few tips (if he doesn't straight away, ill ask anyway! :p) about water quality etc, to make sure I give them the same conditions, so hopefully they continue to breed frequently, when they settle in to their new, larger, environment. :)

Oh yes, that makes much more sence to me.
Thanks for clearing it up.

you should just seed your new tank with filter media from one of your established tanks

6 cories will cause very minimal waste ine a 180l tank. nothing a seeded sponge can't handle

I work at birmingham airport in security, I used to be in the departure part where passengers were checked, I seen a few goldfish go through to India, Its down to the airline, im sure if you asked them in advance they could clear it for you, I dont do the passenger side no more, only deal with the staff, cargo, and vehicles, including the planes and stands out on the apron so it may have changed but i do know most airlines are quite flexible, I beleive for that journey you would be using either BMI or Flybe, either 2 of these are pretty good, if you want i could possibly have a word with one of the managers or the handling agents.
gotta be better than posting.

Anyway back to subject, NICE one :D

Im not sure which airline we are going on, but everythings been booked and my mother isn't likely to start ringing the airline up, she doesn't think fish are overly important..
