Hello. Its been a few years since I've had fish. My wonderful husband has just given me the go head for a new tank. I won't be getting it for a few months yet so i'm doing research. I have some questions on selecting the tank it's self. The spot I have picked out I can fit a good sized tank in. My choices are 55, 75,or a 90 gallon tank. I'm guessing we will be happier if we go for the 90 gallon. So my thoughts are that it comes in a tall or long size. What are the pros and cons of each size? I am wanting to do a planted tank if that makes a difference. Also does the bowfront design have any big pros or cons? Thanks!

You should always go for the biggest tank that you can afford as obviously it gives more scope for fluctuations in water chemistry and opens up your options with stocking. I'd personally say that your best bet is a longer tank rather than a taller one. The reason for this is that most fish prefer to have length to swim in, especially if you are thinking of getting any shoaling fish such as tetras or barbs. Corys will also prefer a long tank as a larger tank footprint means more sand for them to dig in. There are a few exceptions where a tall tank may be better (Angelfish and possibly some Killifish etc) but for the majority of fish, swimming room and length are your best bet.

Agreed. Go for the biggest tank that you can fit into your home AND that you can afford.

Thanks. My space allowed is four feet long and two foot wide roughly. So i'll go for the longer one. I just saw that a 120 gallon might fit. I'm assuming that its just taller. So is it worth getting just for extra height?
