I found three platy fry in my tank today so i put them in a breeder net unfortunatly they all died because the angelfish kept trying to eat them through the bottom of the net. So i put mum into a small 5g tank and shes now had about 10 fry i am now going to put the fry in the breeder net in my other tank which contains tetras and guppies so hopefully they will be ok.

Congrats on the fry that survived. I myself have never used a breeding net succesfuly. They either get picked at or get smushed under the plastic.

i just use a small 5 gallon for my fry, this is your best bet if you want to keep them, i used to use the plastic traps until the angelfish started to pull them through the wholes, i have also used the net trap which i found impossible to keep clean let alone keep the fry in there

Looks a bit like my platy fry but im still not sure. Goldfish fry perhaps :dunno:
I still have 11 fry in the breeder net fed them some crumbled up flake food when i got home from work and they loved it. They are so cute some are dark orange and some are light orange

They are in the breeder net in my tank with my guppies and tetras. Couldnt risk them being in the angelfish tank as they killed 3 through the net by pecking at them. :grr:

How long will it be before i can safely put them in with my guppies and tetras so they can grow better.

My platy fry are a month old and about 1/4 the size of an adult. I could probably put him in with the other adult platies but I want to wait to see what gender it turns out to be before I do that. I think if you wait about 4-6 weeks they will be big enough but make sure they get food. I don't know what kind of tetras you have, knowing what kind they are would help. The guppies shouldn't bother the platys fry tho.

I have black neon and cardinal tetras going to wait a couple more week to see if they are big enough to release into the tank.

Congratulations on the babies! :D

The general rule of thumb for moving them to a community tank, is when they are too big to fit in the biggest fish's mouth, sometimes a bit after if you are worried about aggression. Guppies and Tetras are both pretty peaceful, however some kinds of Tetras can be very nippy, so just watch out for that.

The fry will be two weeks old on Friday i now have 10 one died it got stuck inder the plastic in my breeder net. The others are doing great though. I have a bit of a problem i am due to move house in a couple of weeks i will have to move my tank a week after i have move in. Would it be better to bring the fry with me on the day i move i have a plastic tank that i could fill with my main tank water i also have a sponge filter which is currently running in my large tank to get some bacteria on it would this be ok or can they go for a week without food. Any help gratefully received.

Awww, two weeks. They get so cute, don't they?

I wouldn't leave them a week without food, I doubt they could handle it. Unless you have a whole bunch of live plants they could nibble on. I'd say your idea of moving them with you, with the sponge filter is a good one. It will have some bacteria on it, which is good. Just try to keep the stress down, as much as possible. Also, how are you planning on keeping it heated though? :)

I havnt got a small tank heater will they be ok without a heater or should i purchase one also with a sponge filter running would it be ok to leave the water change for a week untill i get my tanks moved

It depends how cold you expect it to get. Will they be inside a heated house the whole time? It might be worth it to purchase a small <25w one though, just to prevent temperature swings and stress. Yes, it should be okay to leave the water change for a week, but I'd do one right before, and right after. It also might be good if you could just scoop out the excess food in the small tank with the fry, just to prevent the water stats going high. :)

Thanks for the help. Will they be ok in a warm room without a heater dont think i can get one as tank is about 5g ,the maximum time they will be in the small tank will be 7 - 10 days after i have moved my other tanks they will go in with my tetras and guppies providing they are big enough not to be eaten.

They should be fine. I always kept mine near a heat source such as a light but the light was on only for short periods of time but I it on for the night so the fry would not sit on the bottom at night and get infections from sitting on the bottom but there are other ways to heat the small tank.
