Well i fed the momma's this morning and noticed that one of them didn't eat...which sent my mind reeling a bit. But i had someone coming over so went on with my stuff i needed to do, then went in a little later and peered in and what do you know?....BABIES!!!!!!!!!!
i think there's only 3 at the moment but it's a big tank and they're very tiny.
Also one platy is still HUGE - so it wasnt' her that gave birth and the other one is thinner but still not back to normal, maybe she'll have more later on.
Should i turn the light off?
I fed them frozen baby brine shimp and got some spirolina flakes as my lfs hasn't gotten in a shipment of liquid fry food and won't until friday.
EEEEKKKK i'm so excited!!!!!!!!
My first batch of babies!
thanks again Annastasia for all your help - and probably continual help!

YAY! Congrats, congrats, congrats! (one for each baby) :hyper:

Yep, a good way to tell if they are going to give birth soon is when they skip a meal...when they are about to have a fry, they have a hormone that tells them not to eat so they won't eat their fry right away.

And perhaps she will have more later on, some can take up to a week to have all their fry, though that's not very common. I guess you'll just have to wait and see! :D

You don't have to turn the light off, unless they look bothered by it. You can if you want though, it can go either way. :)

You may want to feed some kind of high-protein food like Brine Shrimp, or Tubifex worms or something like that to the mother tonight...giving birth is hard! And you don't want her to get too weak.

Also, if you just want to give them Baby Brine Shrimp and flakes, that should be okay. I only usually use Liquifry for the first 2 weeks, and since it will be about a week before you get it, it may be kind of a lost cause. Are they eating what you are giving them, though?

Congrats again! And have fun raising them!

Congrats sarah - exciting eh?
I'm not sure if they're eating because the tank is quite big and they are busy exploring - now they're hanging out in a floating wysteria and there's some food up there, so i hope so!
They are SOOOO CUTE!!!!!!!! all eyes

Yep...Platy fry are especially cute when they start eating because they get little tummies.

And sorry, I forgot they were still in the main tank. I was thinking you had them in a breeder tank. Anyway, if they are in the main tank, I'd skip the Liquifry. I can't see it doing much for them there. BBS and flakes should be just fine for now.

I've just got a Hi-fin something or other platy, so the next one's ...who knows what kind of colours i'll get.
I can't get too ahead of myself here..i still have one VERY preggy tri-coloured momma in the maternity ward. I'll be very surprised if i dont' have another batch by the time i get home from work tomorrow. She's looking almost square she's so big!
I can't get over how exciting this is to me...my first babies!
