I have 8 black neon tetras, 9 rummynose tetras and 2 shrimp. I especially love my black neons.

Bit worried about 2 of the rummynoses. They are hiding at the back, near the bottom and hardly moving. One looks like a runt and both have less colouration than the others. :/

Think i'll wait till the morning and maybe take them back.

All others are doing marvellous. There were keeping to one side of the tank so i turned one of my airlines off and now they are swimming everywhere.

My shrimp are having a field day with my plants.

I'm so happy :D :D

Excellent :hyper:

I'd let the rummys alone, IME they can look very flaky after moving. They will pull through, have faith  If they kiel over, then take the bodies, a water sample and the recipt back to the shop and explain the situation :good:

All the best

yeah, the faded colour is probably just stress. Let them settle :)

This morning my black neons are nutty darting around the the tank having a great time. the rummynoses, with the exception of 2 are all hiding at the back and hardly moving. Do you think the black neons are too nutty for them. Wilbur (the runt) still looks very unhealthy just sitting on the bottom.

Tested water and is all good
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate around 30

Just give them some time to settle in. Rummys stress really easy, I've acually had some die of shock on me. Bought 8 once quarintined them for 3 weeks, I went to move them from the quarintine tank to their permenant tank...... caught 3 within a minuet, after that they all freaked out. Half stopped swimming before I even caught them. I rounded all up within 3 minuets, by then all where hyper-ventilating and laying on their sides in the bag. Took over too hours before they could swim properly again. I've lost a few over the years to really random things. The syphon scared one to death, the closing of the cabnit door scared the other one to death. They can be skittish fish, some seem to be more skittish than others IMO. The tetras shouldn't bother them though, my are located in a daycare center....

agree with everyone, give the rummy noses time to settle

I know I might seem impatient but how much time? They are still all hiding at the back hardly moving. I've lost one - found it attached to the side of the filter this morning. Even at feed time they didn't come out. If they are going to be unhappy in my tank I'd rather take them back and get things that will be happy

I'd give them a few days, at least. In my experience, eventually hunger gets the better of them and they'll start coming out to eat more often, and when they don't get eaten, they'll start to become a bit more brave. If some of the rummys are out and about, the rest should be happy eventually.

The runt you mention that looks unhealthy - any particular symptoms?

None of them are out anymore. I have one particular one virtually lying on the gravel at the bottom of my filter looking especially listless :(

My runt judt looks emancipated and scrawny tbh. He is half the size of the others. His eye is nearly as big as his head. I don't think he's ill, just a genetic misfit. I think :/

Can you get a pic of the eye, and post back. It could be popeye, a bacterial infection, that also fits the other symptoms. It could also be nothing, but a picture will tell us either way

All the best

He's dead. Post on emergency. :(

Been to Lfs who have excellent staff. There is no sign of disease on either fish so probably a case of them being hyper sensitive. I got 2 more black neons rather than any more rummy noses.

Am going to give it till wednesday and if they are still in hiding then take them back and just stick to a black neon tetra tank because they are having so much fun.

Quite bizarely though the lfs tests showed a trace of nitrite but my own test is showing none. I really shouldn't have any because I did the f/l cycle properly. I'm going to do a 30% water change anyway but how do i know if its worked if my tests are showing zero anyway (API liquid test kit)

What kit did the LFS use?

I'd advise against more fish untill this is sorted

All the best

Did you actually see the lfs test your water they can be sneeky when it comes to having to take fish back and give a refund also do another test for nitrite API test are pretty acurate with nitrite readings :shifty:

Rabbut, don't know the test but was in a big black case with little round bottles.

They did do the test in front of me but the nitrites didn't show for ages. (maybe 10mins but not sure because I was talking) Their colour charts had more choice as well and it read between 0.1 and 0.2.

the water was out the bag i transported the DOA fish in. Could this have affected the result?

Could it be becauuse I stocked to full capacity in one day?

My rummynoses are still being strange. Some of them appear to be getting a sunken belly so they now bear resembelence with the runt. Tis most strange. I will keep a close eye on them.
