Hi

My neighbour has a guppy that had babies this past Tues so about 3 days ago, i was over at her place this morning and noticed that the female that gave birth still looks like she is gonna pop, she looks flat at the bottom and is still wide. So the question is..is she still pregnant even though she gave birth to 20 or so fry on tues or is she just fat. The female was in a different 10 gallon tank by herself when she gave birth, when my friend thought she was done she put her back in the main tank which is a 40 gallon that has guppies and goldfish and gouramis living together . I think the femal is not done yet but its been three days since she gave birth to those fry and im wondering if its possible if she is holding them becasue they wont survive in the main tank. OR maybe she just obese...lol cause shes huge still looks that same as she did before she gave birth .

After 3 days, all of the fry have been dropped. It may be that you are looking at an overfed fish or maybe a different female dropped all the fry.

thanks for replying its the right female because she has two, one yellow and one orange it was the yellow one that dropped i watched her put the yellow in the 10 gallon and went over every day to see if she had popped yet and on tues i went over after work and she had babies and she had put the yellow one back in the 40 gallon tank. today though when i went over after work i was looking at the yellow one she still looks squared off and wide at the sides and belly is big just like she looked when my friend put her in to the 10 gallon. So i guess theres no chance if she was to put her in to a breeding box in the 10 gallon that she would drop any more ?? I did tell her that maybe shes feeding them too much but her other fish are not overly fat though and she only feeds twice a day but her 40 gallon has 3 gold fish the 2 female guppies and one male guppie plus a female and male gourmis oh and a pleco. I did however check to make sure no scales were standing up so its not dropsy. Guess we will just have to wait and see if she gets skinny soon... too bad there wasnt an excerise wheel for fish...lol

I have just started with an aquarium this year (April). 6 neons, 3 guppies (2 female, 1 male). Only have 1 female guppy left, 2 weeks after getting the guppies 1 female and the male died.

The female has since given birth each month over 4 months and is still pregnant. First month - 2 fry, 2nd month - 4 fry, 3rd month - 4 fry, 4th month -2 fry. She is self fertilising from the original males sperm. She is again pregnant and roughly delivers her babies every 28 days.

I find this fascinating and wonder when she will stop!

I believe guppies, platies, mollies and maybe swordtail femals can store a males sperm for up to about 7 months. Therefore they can impregnate them selfs till they used it all up.

The general consensus is about 6 months of carrying viable sperm packets but I am sure it varies somewhat, just like anything else in living creatures.
