So I'm wondering... If neon tetras and common plecs are so hard to breed, why are they so widely available? All the time I hear that Plecs have to breed in ponds, or neons are difficult to breed... but why are they available all around the world?

Probably b/c the people that do breed them breed them in large ponds... at least that's my guess :)

I have no idea where huge fish managers live, but I suppose that could be true. But what about neons? Would the "bulk fish breeders" know the correct conditions?

They are bred in huge ponds in places like Singapore. For some hard-to-breed fish, breeders are said to use hormones. And mass bred fish are often dosed with preventative antibiotics. Which explains why some fish are weak and sickly.

Ah, yes it does... poor fishies. :-(

Majority of non-wild-caught fish avaliable in shops come from 'fish farms' all over the world. Asia, South America and Canada are the biggest exporters of ornamental fish worldwide. They mass-breed thousands of different fish from neon tetras to rare L number plecs. It's really easy to breed most fish in the right conditions and with enough room - the fish farms have this room and these conditions.

I must admit though, I would love to visit a fully-fledged 'fish-farm' in somewhere like Singapore or Bejing.

most fish are very, very easy to breed. the 'right conditions' are the water parameters ie the pH and GH. the 'room', well you just need a tank basically with a heater in it, set at the right temp. ok for tank busters you need a big tank and these fish are harder to breed because they need to be very big to be sexually mature but most fish are very easy to breed
